Lithgow: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Glow Worm Tunnel

The Glow Worms are located in an old rail tunnel 400 metres in length. It was originally constructed as part of the railway line to Newnes Kerosene Shale Works. The line was dismantled around the 1940s.The tunnel is located 40 kilometres from Lithgow on the Newnes Plateau. Good walking shoes and a torch are required for the walk through the tunnel.

The glow worms found in the tunnel are the larvae of the fungus gnat. The blue glow of the larvae is the result of a chemical reaction in the body of the glow worm. The larvaes' glow lures their prey, such as mosquito's, closer to them.

Newnes Shale Oil Ruins

At the end of Wolgan Valley lies a reminder of the shale oil industry. The township and shale oil mining complex was established in 1906. The Newnes Oil Shale Mine produced low grade oil. Set within beautiful mountain scenery, a collection of shanties, huts and buildings for the mining process were built. Today the ruins of the site are all that remains.

Operational costs and the availability of lower priced crude oil finally closed the works in 1932. The former hotel (now Newnes Kiosk) is the only reminder of a thriving community.

A brief stop at the top of the Wolgan Gap affords excellent views of Wolgan Valley and the spectacular sandstone escarpments.

To reach the ruins of the works, cross the river at the fjord by foot, or 4WD downstream from the hotel, and follow the well-defined path which was the original route of the railway line.

Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum

In 1906 the Australian Government decided Australia should be independent from Britain for her defence needs. The Lithgow Small Arms Factory commenced production in 1912.

This museum, situated in the grounds of the Small Arms Factory, celebrates the rich history of Australia's first high precision mass production facility and its people.

Over its years of operation Lithgow SAF accumulated military small arms from all over the world for technical appraisal. These and the Factory's own production form the basis of a most comprehensive collection of rifles, sub-machine guns and ordnance.

To keep this vital factory going between wars, an amazing array of commercial products were manufactured. The Factory saved the floundering Australian wool Industry during the 1930s, manufacturing parts for shearing handsets, replacing expensive English equipment.

In 2007, collector Ron Hayes donated a magnificent handgun collection. The diversity in the Ron Hayes Gallery will amaze even those disinterested in firearms.

The sound of roaring car and bike engines will soon fill the air as vintage, special cars and bikes from across the state make their way to Lithgow Showground for the Charity Car, Bike and Recreational Show.

The event has become one of the largest car shows for the Lithgow area. It is not like any other car show event, where they can be a bit too 'blokey'. Organisers have placed the importance on it being family friendly and welcoming to everyone. In addition to the unique cars and bikes on display, there should be boats, vintage vans as well as trucks.
