Goulburn and District Racing Club

Goulburn has a long association with horse racing, with records indicating that racing commenced in 1838 when challenge races were held in the vicinity of the Gordon Hotel. The oldest Goulburn Cup Trophy dates back to 1883 and is currently displayed at the historic St Clair Museum. The Goulburn and District Racing Club Limited was founded in 1969 after a combined Club known as the Goulburn and District Racing and Trotting Club was disbanded.

The Goulburn and District Racing Club facilities are among the most technologically advanced in Australia today and include a multi-purpose, heritage style function area with a country atmosphere and wood fire, fully licensed public and member's bars and modern catering facilities.

A variety of marquees are available for sponsors and private functions in prime positions and strategically placed television monitors enable visitors to see all the action.

St Clair Villa Museum and Archives

St Clair Villa in Goulburn was built between 1843 and 1849. It is a unique example of an early provincial villa, of the late Georgian period, of a classical design.

Over the years St Clair became variously a private home, a 'school for young ladies' and a private boarding house. It was purchased by the Goulburn Council in 1970. Today St Clair Villa is one of the oldest remaining houses in Goulburn and holds important local archives and museum collections including textiles, domestic items, historic photographs, parish maps, newspapers, diaries and journals from early pioneer families from Goulburn and surrounding districts, providing insights into the region's rich historical past.

Towrang Stockade

Located on the Sydney side of Goulburn on the Hume Highway, the Towrang Stockade was the Chief Penal Camp in the southern district of the newly founded colony of New South Wales from 1833 to 1843.

Up to 250 convict men were housed there and were engaged in the construction of a section of the Great South Road, from Sydney to Goulburn.

These men were divided into two parties; the seven-year men were without irons and were assigned the lighter tasks, while the 14-year men and lifers were in irons and given hard labour. Dressed in a yellow and black uniform, the convicts slept 10 men to a 12 square metre cell, on bare boards, with one blanket rationed to each man.

A parking area runs alongside the east-bound, left hand lane of the Hume Highway.
