Cavan: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Hume Park

Hume Park is located on the backwaters of Lake Burrinjuck and was established in 1927. Easily accessible, tree shaded, relaxing and quiet, it is ideal for day visitors and a water skier's haven with plenty of room to move around. Please phone the operator for the current water levels. If you wish to stay a little longer there are powered and unpowered sites, and cabins are also available.

The facilities include a kiosk, public amenities, picnic area and swimming area, barbecue, fishing (licences available at the kiosk), launching ramp, fuel, indoor amusement centre, water ski equipment and accessories.

Bring the whole family along for a peaceful escape.

Hume Park was developed to commemorate the epic crossing of the flooded Murrumbidgee River by the Hume and Hovell expedition in October 1824. Brief details of this event are on a stone cairn near the boat ramp.

Carey's Cave

The gem of Wee Jasper.

Travelling to Wee Jasper is a journey through one of the most diverse geological landscapes in Australia. The road passes through a range of volcanic and sedimentary rocks with a mix of broad acre and grazing rural properties. After crossing the historic bridge over the Goodradigbee River you drive through the village to the school at the end of the road and turn right, the sealed road will take you six kilometres out to Carey's Cave.

Described as one of the most beautiful and fascinating tour cave systems in Australia, Carey's Caves offers opportunities not found on conventional cave tours. There are a total of seven beautiful chambers of Crystal formations. There are 30 steps down into Carey's Cave. After this, most of the pathways are fairly level. The floors of the chambers are mostly flat and you have the opportunity to explore different options.

Wee Jasper Bridge over Goodradigbee River

Completed in 1896, the Wee Jasper Bridge is an early example of an Allan type timber truss road bridge. Allan trusses were third in the five stage design evolution of NSW timber truss bridges, and were a major improvement over the McDonald trusses which preceded them.

The Wee Jasper bridge is a representative example of Allan timber truss road bridges, and is assessed as being State significant, primarily on the basis of its technical and historical significance.

Bridges are not just functional, they can also be scenic and engineering attractions. Spare a few minutes to admire Wee Jasper Bridge over Goodradigbee River.

Hume and Hovell Walking Track

The Hume and Hovell Walking Track extends from Cooma Cottage Yass to Albury. It follows as closely as possible the route taken by the famous overland explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell. The track skirts around the high mountain ranges and crosses some farming country and forestry lands; about half the track is along roads, or on forestry vehicle tracks.

The 440 kilometres track is well signposted and provides opportunities for numerous day walks, weekend walks or for the 'long distance' walker a 21 day walk.

Eighteen campsites with clearings, pit toilets, water, and tables have been established along the route. Distance between campsites varies from six to 30 kilometres and camping (no facilities) is also allowed in between the established sites.

There are also three special track heads along the route (about 100 kilometres apart) with hot water, showers, and electric cooking plates amongst the facilities.
