Fossil Rock

An amazing fossil leaf deposit with particularly fine detail has been preserved in Dalton, located just 10 minutes north of Gunning. This 40 million year old fossil can be seen under the shelter in the park along Oolong Creek. A little known fact is that the town is situated on a fault in the earth's crust and receives minor but persistent tremors.

Pye Cottage

Pye Cottage is an original slab hut donated to the Gunning Historical Society by the Pye family. Located in the main street of Gunning, the house is in its original state from circa 1886 to 1887.

Take a step back in time, view a variety of documents and artefacts and enjoy reliving the historic pioneering days. Pye Cottage is probably one of the last of its kind in the district, and the last of its design, which had been used for generations past by the early settlers of the highland country.

The Yass to Wee Jasper section of track provides for half day, one day and weekend walks suitable for the whole family.

Although the basic activity associated with the track is walking, there are opportunities for a range of recreational pursuits including swimming, camping, nature study, fishing, photography, wildlife observation and historical appreciation.

The track starts at Cooma Cottage Yass and goes via Black Range Road to Burrinjuck, then by boat (by arrangement with Burrinjuck Kiosk) to Wee Jasper. Walkers may join the track 60 kilometres south of Yass at Wee Jasper.
