Yass Valley located an easy 45 minute drive from Canberra. Yass Valley has its own unique charm and country friendliness. You can be assured of a warm welcome when you visit the Valley. During the early 1800's, the natural beauty and superior agricultural land of the Yass district led famous explorer Hamilton Hume and the poet Banjo Paterson to settle in the district. Today, the main street of Yass is brimming with architectural treasures reminiscent of early settlement days. Many of the wonderful heritage features of Yass are best visited on foot. Whilst walking down Comur Street you can browse through the antique shops and galleries or stop for a cup of freshly brewed coffee in a sidewalk cafe. Located just five minutes from Yass, you can visit National Trust Property Cooma Cottage, which was once the home of Hamilton Hume, or venture further afield to the studios of internationally renowned glass artist Peter Crisp. Yass also has many rural and adventure activities available to visitors including horse riding, paragliding, caving at Wee Jasper, abseiling, boating and water skiing. Visit an alpaca stud or a working sheep farm. Burrinjuck Dam was built in the early 1900's, as a water storage system for the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. The dam is a popular attraction and offers cruises, water-sports, fishing, camping, and bushwalking. The surrounding eucalypt forests boast an abundance of sightseeing and wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies and crimson rosellas, some of which can be hand fed.ass Valley has a wide range of accommodation styles, ranging from four star motels and historic Bed and Breakfasts, to luxury hideaway cabins and farm stays on working sheep properties.

Yass Archives


The Yass Archives are located upstairs at the Memorial Hall, entry via the lane way to the Library off Comur Street in Yass. The Yass Library is located at the back of the hall and next to the archive's office.

The Archives are the depository for print and photographic records of the Yass Valley. It is also an excellent starting point if you are researching your family history in the Yass area. The staff are willing and on hand to assist you with your research.

Search forms are available from the Yass Valley Visitor Information Centre. Visit the website or email them and someone will answer your request. (Search fees do apply.)

Yass Railway Museum


Experience the Yass Railway Museum in all its historical glory. Walk through the yard and view the main station building, the station master's residence, an original loading bank, a goods shed, the mighty black 1307 Steam locomotive that was the mainstay of the state railway system, in service for nearly 95 years.

There's also a Vulcan locomotive and a romantic open-ended 1908 platform carriage along with other rolling stock, station and railway buildings. The station boasts the shortest platform in New South Wales! With convenient parking and right in the town centre.

Yass Historic Walk and Drive


View the well-preserved main street with buildings dating from the 1840s, including the beautifully restored Victorian buildings, churches, courthouse, historical museum, cemetery, parks and railway station museum.

Blue plaques affixed to the buildings will give you historical information. Enjoy the beautiful town.

Drop into the Yass Valley Visitor Information Centre and collect a map and a guide for the historic town walk and town drive so that you may experience some interesting and astounding architecture. The centre will be your starting point for both the walk and the drive.

The Yass Golf Club


The Yass Golf Club is the 29th oldest course in New South Wales. Located in the thriving township of Yass it is an 18 hole grass green course, fully irrigated, measuring 5,193 metres, with a par of 68 and an ACR of 66.

Yass Show and PBR Bull Ride

Classic Yass


Classic Yass is an amazing weekend of family fun and events. A sensational motor show of classic cars on display in Banjo Patterson Park and very popular Rotary Billy Cart Derby returns.

The Vintage Fashion will be a highlight this year, so dress up, and come along to soak up the atmosphere. Tune into Sydney band 'The Hips' featuring Paul McCann and Rockpile Jones of Ol'55 fame, starting at 11am in the park. Also playing later on at the Yass Soldiers Club from 8pm.

Art's, Craft and Hobbies will be held at the Yass Memorial Hall while Scouts Markets and Rotary Farmers markets will be held in Meehan Street, all on the Saturday.

Australia Day in Yass Valley


Celebrate Australia's National Day with celebrations in the Yass Coronation Park.

The Rotary Club of Yass provide breakfast in the park from 7am.

Winners of the Australia Day awards are announced in the park at 9.15am. Yass Valley Australia Day Citizen Awards are to recognise outstanding individuals and groups who make a real contribution and difference to our community. The Australia Day Ambassador will also address the audience.

Entry is free so come along and enjoy a true Australia Day like no other here in the Yass Valley.
