Capertee Valley

Surrounded by the wonders of World Heritage listed wilderness, the Capertee Valley is the world's second largest canyon. Sandstone cliffs dominate the escarpment, drawing down into a deep chasm carved into the environment over millions of years. Energy Expo at Mt Piper

You can visit the Mount Piper Power Station Energy Expo every day of the year, except Christmas Day, between 9am and 4pm, tours are available by prior arrangement. Here you'll be able to enjoy exhibits, models, displays, photographic and printed information, videos and touch screens and gain an understanding of the way NSW electricity is produced and distributed.

While the tour mainly focuses on coal-fired thermal power stations, like EnergyAustralia's Mt Piper, you'll also get to explore information on developments in renewable energy sources. Entry and tours are completely free, and the power station includes picnic facilities, a children's playground and electric barbecues to make for a great day out for the whole family.

Newnes Kiosk

The Newnes Kiosk is within the bar of the now de-licensed Newnes Hotel, the last surviving building from the days of oil-shale mining at Newnes. The kiosk is open weekends and supplies information on the local Newnes area. Soft drinks, ice creams and a limited range of camper supplies are also stocked. Cabin accommodation is also now available.

Newnes is surrounded by Wollemi National Park, part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. The kiosk is adjacent to camping (free within the National Park) and close to the (open access) ruins of the Newnes oil-shale works. A bushwalk (nine kilometre round trip) to the Glow-worm tunnel starts on the Wolgan Road, 6.5 kilometres before Newnes.

St John the Evangelist Church

St John's was erected by Mrs Georgina Abbott as a memorial to her parents, Mr and Mrs James Walker and her first husband, Mr Edwin Barton. It was designed by Blacket and Son, architects and built by George Donald, opening on 6 November, 1881 as the "Wallerawang" estate private chapel. From its opening it was used by Presbyterian and Anglican Churches and was given to both on 18 November, 1952. Services are held at this beautiful little church on the first and third Sunday of the month.

Portland Art Exhibition

Since its debut in 1976, the continued success of the Portland Art Exhibition has caused it to grow in both size and importance within the arts communities of Portland and the surrounding regions.

In prior years, any money raised from art sales has been distributed back into the local community. The works are displayed in the Crystal Theatre, itself a historical and highly valued icon in a town widely known as a hidden gem in the Central Tablelands.

Opening night is on Friday, 4 March. Wine and a light supper will be available.

2016 Glow Worm Tunnel Trail Running Weekend.

The weekend includes events for the whole family, all on some of the most pristine trails and in one of the most amazing National Parks in Australia. The event has filled each year with many people returning and making it their regular Run and Fun weekend in a stunning location.

The weekend is about family, friends and great running in a special part of the world. The start and finish of all of the events is in front of the historic Newnes Hotel, the only remaining building from the industrial township in the early 1900s. At the turn of the century and during its peak, Newnes was a hub of mining with approximately 3,000 people living in the township.
