Rosnay Organic Farm and Vineyard

Rosnay is an organic vineyard and orchard at Canowindra, in the Central Ranges of NSW.

Rosnay was created by the Statham family in 1997, and produces certified organic wines, olives, and figs.

Certified organic since 1998, the vines and orchards have never been sprayed with harmful chemicals, a family commitment that began with Richard's father Clive Statham. The family's wine growing heritage begins on the other side of the family, with Florence Statham's French grandfather, Alberic Dulong de Rosnay, after whom the farm is named.

Rosnay Organic Farm and Vineyard is available any day of the week to visit by appointment only.

Age Of Fishes Museum

Imagine a world ruled by fish! Long before the dinosaurs the mighty rivers of the Central West teamed with bizarre ancient fishes - fish with armour shells, fish with lungs, and huge predators with jaws like crocodiles. Thousands of their fossils were found at Canowindra and give a unique glimpse into the Devonian Period - the 'Age of Fishes'.

The Museum displays many of these beautiful fossils together with live aquarium displays and wonderful recreations of life in the Devonian.

The Age of Fishes Museum offers two permanent exhibitions, an education program, gift shop, accessible facilities, and geological time-walk in the picnic ground and a free barbecue. Bring a picnic or barbecue in the peaceful grounds while the kids play on the giant games board. Entry includes an audio tour or guided tour. Groups are welcome. Please book in advance.

Prisoner Of War Camp Site

This site is listed as one of the Top Heritage Sites in NSW. In 1944 over 1000 Japanese Prisoners of War (POW) staged a mass breakout that was the biggest in British and Australian War History. 231 Japanese POW and four Australians lost their lives during the breakout.

A walking trail goes through the camp ruins and a scale model of the camp is on display at the Cowra Visitors Centre. Also at the Visitor Information Centre is the P.O.W. theatre which is a nine minute presentation telling the story of the breakout from the perspective of a local resident.

Cowra Bridge Pylons

Cowra Bridge Pylons are situated beneath the Lachlan River Bridge and feature aboriginal murals on the pylons. The murals were painted by local aboriginal artist, Kym Freeman and depict the history of the Wiradjuri people who inhabited the Cowra area prior to English settlement. The size of the murals and the attention to fine detail make them a must see when visiting Cowra. They are just a short walk from the Visitor Information Centre down towards the river.

Japanese and Australian War Cemeteries

The Japanese War Cemetery contains graves of the Japanese involved in the POW Breakout during World War Two, as well as other internees and those involved with the battle of Darwin. The land was ceded to Japan in 1963, thus Cowra has its own little piece of Japan. A large black granite monument dominates the Cemetery and the burning of incense, wreaths and gifts can be seen at the Cemetery after Official Functions. This is the only Japanese War Cemetery in Australia.

The Australian section commemorates those who died in training at the local Military Camp, as well as the four Soldiers who were killed during the breakout. The Cowra War Cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and has become a showpiece for modern military cemeteries.
