Combara: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Nickname Hall of Fame

The Nickname is a mystifying tradition and a national phenomenon. Nowhere are nicknames thicker on the ground that across Australia's remote rural regions and Coonamble is the capital. You have entered a realm where the 'real' names of most of the men and many of the women and children have been forgotten, even by their mothers. Nothing and no-one is safe.

Anything is fodder for the nicknaming wits of Coonamble - a personal mannerism, a once-mentioned mistake, one mis-pronounced word, an unusual physical characteristic, a fashion faux pas, a sporting slip-up, or a midnight misjudgement. A nickname may last a day, a week on the job ... or many generations.

Coonamble is the Nickname Hall of Fame. Take a stroll to see the billboards scattered around the streets and get to know some of their stories. Or stay for a while and get to know the locals.

Museum Under the Bridge

The Museum Under the Bridge is the former police station built in 1886 and has been converted to the Coonamble Historical Museum.

The museum displays artefacts, photographs, implements and household utensils used in Coonamble's early history. The 'trooper' brick horse stables have been retained in original form with stalls, feed boxes and saddlery and is one of only two of its kind left in NSW. Just recently a Cobb and Co coach was obtained by the museum and restored and loaned out for parades and celebrations.

The Bourbah Street Murals

The Bourbah Street Murals were designed by artist Sam Newstead and officially opened in 2002. The objective was to create a mural for the community of Gulargambone to be displayed in the shop windows of the main street in the town centre and to cover the then vacant facades. The theme of the mural is a day in Gulargambone.

Starting in the twilight, through the dawn, morning, and the heat of the day, moving on to evening, nightfall, and a new dawn. The Castlereagh River runs through the entire mural, in drought and in flood.

Coonamble Rodeo and Campdraft

Held over the June Long Weekend every year and running for over 60 years, the Coonamble Rodeo &and Campdraft is the largest event held in Coonamble and is the largest combined Rodeo/Campdraft in the Southern Hemisphere.

Around 1000 cowboys and cowgirls, along with approximately 4000 spectators, head across the central western plains of New South Wales to the edge of the Outback, transforming the Coonamble Showground into a full-on explosion of wild riding action.

On Saturday and Sunday, the cowboys launch from the chutes competing for over AUD30000 worth of prize money in steer wrestling, calf roping, barrel racing and, of course, the glamour events of the Saddle Bronc, Bareback and Bull rides. On Monday the Junior Rodeo sees the up and coming stars of the Rodeo circuit compete.
