Coonabarabran is in Central NSW and is located within two hours drive of the regional cities of Dubbo and Tamworth. It is located at the junction of the Newell and Oxley Highways, midway between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Known as the 'Astronomy Capital of Australia', Coonabarabran is the gateway to Warrumbungle National Park.

Coonabarabran has one of the darkest skies in Australia and is the home of Australia's largest optical astronomy research facility, Siding Spring Observatory. The area around Coonabarabran is ideal for stargazing with high altitude, low humidity, a non-turbulent atmosphere for viewing clarity, clean air and an average of 70 per cent clear night skies.

A dump site is available for free usage 24 hours in Coonabarabran, on Essex Street adjacent to Neilson Park at GPS Latitude 31 degrees 16'16.34 South, Longitude 149 degrees 16'47.07 East.

Coona Astro Ventures


Coona Astro Ventures, provides day time solar observing, evening telescope viewing and night sky tours for bus groups, schools and the public in Coonabarabran and Baradine.

They offer, as part of the University of Southern Queensland Astronomy in Schools Program, a service for schools to experience the wonders of the night sky and learn about astronomy via classroom sessions and talks. The sky viewing program complements school curriculum requirements.

Coona Astro Ventures has telescopes will travel - for functions and visiting coach groups they can come to your accommodation or meet you at a central location.

Woodpecker Gun


The Woodpecker Gun is a War Memorial to those who served in the Second World War. The Japanese Machine Gun, which is at the front of the Memorial Swimming Pool, adjacent to the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre, was captured on August 3, 1945 during combat in New Guinea and is a free attraction to visit.

There is an information board at the gun site with details of the capture and a listing of the Coonabarabran men and women who served in World War Two and the Vietnam War.

After visiting this attraction, walk just 200 metres south to visit the Coonabarabran Visitor Centre where you can collect information on other attractions throughout the Warrumbungle Region. This is a 24 hour viewing place.

Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition


The Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition is housed at the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre, on the Newell Highway, at the southern end of town.

The exhibition displays the skeleton and skull of a Diprotodon, the largest marsupial ever to have lived. It is often likened to a giant sized wombat. The remains of the Diprotodon were found in the creek bed of Cox's Creek near Tambar Springs in 1979. The exhibition also provides information on other mega fauna that were believed to have existed at around the same time.

Free guided tours of the display are available for groups with advance notice. Please call the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre for more information.

There is also an area located in the Museum which shows art work from local artists, as well as an Aboriginal Keeping Place.

Crystal Kingdom


Crystal Kingdom is the home of one of the world's most unique mineral collections, the "Minerals of the Warrumbungles".

See the world's rarest and most colourful Zeolite Crystals and learn about how the Coonabarabran area was once home to not one, but two volcanoes. Experienced staff are available to explain the fascinating origin of these extinct local volcanoes.

More than 500 examples of local minerals and fossils are on display. Not only are these treasures of the earth on show, their origin and use is explained and fact sheets are available.

The educational exhibition displays a range of fossils from 300 million years ago to the recent age of the Australian Megafauna.

Jewellery lovers and collectors will love browsing through the 'Crystal Shop'. Here you will find quality gemstone jewellery, crystals and fossils. You can also get creative with 'Rosie's Beads' and design your own unique piece of jewellery.

Bunny Bazaar


Held every year on Easter Saturday, the Bunny Bazaar is a morning of fun and entertainment for the whole family. The main street is closed to traffic from 8am to 1pm and locals and visitors alike can meander the street, enjoying the many street stalls, musical entertainment and great shopping specials. There's a jumping castle for the kid's entertainment and plenty of food stalls to tempt the tastebuds.

Call into the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre for helpful advice on local attractions, national parks, accommodation, eating out options, and events information. There are maps, guide books, souvenirs and gifts available for purchase. The Visitor Centre is located only a short walk from Coonabarabran central business district and there is plenty of parking for caravans and motorhomes.

While there, take a look at the museum which houses the Diprotodon, Art Gallery and the Aboriginal Keeping Place. Also available are talks on the Diprotodon for school groups and all other groups. Bookings essential.
