Mendooran

Mendooran's location off the busy highways has its advantages. This quiet rural village on the edge of the Goonoo National Park offers a sense of peace and safety to the weary traveller. Mendooran derives its name from the original run, Mendooran, and mention is made of the settlement on the Castlereagh in Banjo Patterson's Poem "The Travelling Post Office".

Known as a mural town, artist Karin Duce has painted the main street with colourful murals reflecting country life and Mendooran's history. A great place for a short break in your journey or to spend a night or two at the Mendooran rest area with free camping by the Castlereagh River, showing its strength and sandy origins. There is a great country pub and loads of local personalities to entertain you. The post office has information to make your visit to the Warrumbungle Shire an experience to remember.

Mendooran is only 75ks from Coonabarabran township which leads to the Warrumbungle National Park and Siding Spring Observatory.

Mendooran: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Mendooran Mural Town

Take a leisurely stroll through the village of Mendooran while gazing at the large murals throughout the township. Many of the murals were painted by former resident artist, Karen Duce. Don't miss the great bullock scene on the pub corner depicting a dray packed high with wool bales, hauled by a team of bullocks. This settlement is the oldest on the Castlereagh River and is something of a mecca for horse sports, with an annual rodeo and the Mendooran Cup, which has been held annually for more than 153 years.

Free camping is also available at Mendooran Rest Area with toilet and cold showers only, no dump point facilities are available. If you are camping and want to have a break away from cooking, visit the Royal Hotel for a good country meal and this will also entitle you to a nice hot shower.
