Millthorpe

Millthorpe and its distinctive bluestone buildings are blanketed by a National Trust listing, but, had the political fates been kinder, the small Central Tablelands town might well have been a national showcase. Just outside town near the turnoff to Spring Hill stand some large granite blocks that mark an area which, back in the 1890s, was seriously considered as the site of the national capital. In the end, of course, Canberra got the nod. About 30km south of Orange, Millthorpe is at the centre of a region which raged with gold fever in the 1850s and the Golden Memories Museum is located in the Good Templars Hall which was built in 1881. The remains of John Lister, co-discoverer of gold at Ophir in 1851, rest in a grave in the local cemetery. The Old Mill Café, which occupies one of the town's original bakeries dating back to the 1890s doubles as a visitors' information centre. Contemporary main street buildings accommodate gift shops, a craft gallery and a period lolly shop. The magnificent old railway station which was built in 1870 is attended by a slightly younger Railway Hotel.

Golden Memories Millthorpe Museum

Golden Memories Museum is where heritage comes alive!

There are historic buildings, fascinating history with memories of pioneering days, gold discovery and mining displays, and a huge collection of farm machinery. The Good Templars Hall houses many treasures - Victorian and Edwardian pieces as well as a pistol and fossicking pick which belonged to John Lister. Plus there's a unique display of Wiradjuri weapons and objects from the district. In the Cadia Theatrette a collection of gold mining and geology supports video of the current gold mining operation at Cadia Valley to the West of Millthorpe.

The Barracks Galleries and Studios

Colour City Creatives Inc was established in 2010 in Orange, to give local creatives and artists facilities for collaboration, exhibition, shop outlet, studio rental, workshops and mutual support.

The ever growing and vibrant group from the local area, produces art at the Barracks and in their private studios at their homes, properties and farms. From far and wide the art is brought in for exhibitions held jointly. The resulting collaboration weaves a wonderful web of visual stories and personal expression.

During the local festivals, the artists throw open the doors of the Barracks Galleries and Studios to the public and you are invited to explore the studio spaces, see how an artist works, walk the corridors, look around the galleries, be inspired by the exhibitions.

At other times access is by appointment, so give them a ring and have a creative look around.
