Warrimoo

Warrimoo is an Aboriginal word meaning place of the eagle. Warrimoo is located 75 kilometres west of Sydney.

Settlement of the area began in the 1880s and grew with the development of the railway station in 1918.

The Lower Blue Mountains bush walk from Warrimoo to Blaxland along the Florabella Pass and Pippas Pass track is a popular trek for locals and visitors to the region.

Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum


Explore the oldest roundhouse in NSW and enjoy the sights, sounds (and smells) of rail travel over the last 130 years!

Enjoy unlimited 20 minute rides in the 1880s Heritage Listed Sydney Steam Tramcar or 1890 "Cowboy" carriage hauled by ancient tank engine "Stevo".

View model railway layouts including a five metre long HO scale model of the Depot as it was in the 1950s.

Climb aboard steam engines, carriages and wagons from many eras of trains across the mountains. See the remarkable "Caves Express" and the "Ice Van", carefully restored to their former glory!

View exhibits of rail artefacts and paintings, local history and photographic display plus the shop stocks a selection of books, DVDs and other souvenir items.

Kids can do the fascinating 10-question quiz and check answers on the website.

The museum is normally open the second and fourth Sunday of every month. Barbecue facilities are available or relax with a cup of tea or coffee and cake in the tea rooms.

Braemar Gallery


Opened in 1988, Braemar Gallery functions as a community gallery, hosting changing exhibitions that showcase works of local and regional artists. Situated in beautiful historic Braemar House, the gallery is a valuable community venue.

Braemar has a particular interest in displaying works by local young artists and annually holds an exhibition of lower Blue Mountains Candidates in the HSC. Over time, the gallery has become well known for high standard art works of various mediums.

Lennox Bridge in The Blue Mountains


Lennox Bridge on Mitchells Pass at Glenbrook is the oldest stone arch bridge on the Australian mainland. This elegant single span stone arch bridge was built in local stone and completed in 1833 by David Lennox using unskilled convict labour. It took one year to complete. The sandstone was quarried nearby and the bridge carried all the traffic to western New South Wales until 1926. An early engineering masterpiece.

Warrimoo: Events

Steam Train or Tram Rides at Valley Heights


On selected Sundays, visitors may ride in a vintage open-ended "cowboy" carriage. This will be pulled by a Stephenson Tank Engine from 1899 which has recently been revived for the Museum's 25 minute return trip (subject to change/operating conditions).

Other operating days (see website) will still see all day rides on the ever popular Steam Tram from the 1890s.

Now in full swing is a new free Smartphone app that visitors can download to enjoy interesting facts and figures about the exhibits. Take the app home to share.

A newly unveiled World War One Honour Board commemorates 18 local railwaymen who enlisted for World War One. Read the stories behind these young mens' lives.

Springwood Australia Day Festival

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day Parade and Service


The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day Parade and Service commemorates the Battle of Long Tan, the most significant engagement by Australian Forces during the Vietnam War on 18 August 1966. Each year on the closest Sunday, Vietnam Veterans gather at the War Memorial for a commemorative service and wreath laying.

This year the event will start with the parade and service in Macquarie Road Springwood from 11am to 12.30pm. In the afternoon from 4pm to 4.45pm, proceedings continue with the Beating the Retreat Ceremony with Lithgow Pipe Band at the War Memorial.
