Whether you're a toddler dipping your toes in for the first time, or a world-class surfer, with over 32 kilometres of coastline to choose from, it's easy to find the ideal swimming or surfing spot in Ballina.

There are calm sandy beaches and shoals on the banks of the Richmond River, rising swells perfect for a body bash at one of the many beaches and there are often perfect barrels rolling of North Wall and the world famous right hand break at Lennox Point.

There are beaches that allow four wheel drive vehicle access and some that allow dogs and horses. Local operators offer horse riding on isolated beaches, both north and south of Ballina. It's the stuff that postcards are made of.

Creative Artisans Gallery


Creative Artisans Gallery is all original work with most of the items such as the jewellery, woodwork and silk, being 'one-off' designs.

The gallery aims to showcase original creations and artwork from local artists and artisans. It is owned and managed by local women who have lived and worked in the shire for many years.

Purchasing artwork from the gallery ensures an income for the artisans, and local suppliers and creates jobs within the community. There are so many very talented people who do not have the opportunity to have their work presented for sale on an ongoing basis - not just in exhibitions that may last from a couple of days to a month.

Northern Rivers Community Gallery


The Northern Rivers Community Gallery is a community exhibition space created through the refurbishment of the heritage listed former Council Chambers in Ballina.

Developed by Council in partnership with the community, the gallery provides the perfect centre for the arts and crafts in the region, with four gallery spaces that can be rented for exhibitions and cultural activities, and a learning centre.

The gallery presents a changing program of exhibitions by artists from across the Northern Rivers. Visitors can enjoy exhibitions, artist demonstrations and workshops. Artworks and locally crafted jewellery, ceramics and gift ware are for sale in the Gallery Shop.

The gallery shares the heritage building (built 1927) with the delightful Ballina Gallery Cafe which is open from Wednesday to Sunday for breakfast, morning tea and lunch.

Sea Silks Gallery


This beautiful gallery is located in the heart of Ballina under the Ramada Hotel, and overlooking the Richmond River. The gallery is a collective of the finest local silk and glass artists living in the beautiful region of Northern NSW. They all have a close connection with Mother Nature and their work reflects her amazing beauty.

Kim Michelle Toft's vivid hand painted silks and environmental children's books of the underwater world, Jacqueline King's exquisite one-off glass pieces, Helen Dunn's playful silk and crystal birds, Arnie Gautsch's intricately etched glass, and Trudy Gautsch's stunning glass jewellery make up the collective. All the artists work in the gallery.

Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum


Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum is home to a stunning collection of history and memorabilia. These include the last remaining Las Balsas expedition raft which travelled from Ecuador to Australia forty years ago, the largest collection of ship models in Australia, rare and unique shipwreck items, and the fascinating history of the Port of Ballina.

The museum features DVD showings and interactive displays - perfect for the kids - as well as plenty to keep the adults interested such as recreated scenes from naval vessels, a tribute to women in the navy, and an extensive collection of naval uniforms.

Offering guided tours for large groups, a souvenir and gift shop, and open seven days from 9am to 4pm, why not take the time to discover the remarkable history of the Ballina area at the Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum.

Norton Street Heritage Trail


This interesting heritage trail takes in Ballina's most historic precinct - Norton Street. Norton Street began as a bustling thoroughfare and transformed into Ballina's most prestigious residential address. Gorgeous houses and buildings line both sides of the street, each with its own tale to tell.

A highlight of the walk is Ballina Manor Boutique Hotel, formerly North Coast Girls College, which also offers free tours of the house every day. Flanked by hundred year old Norfolk Pines, this leisurely walk is the perfect way to spend an hour discovering Ballina's rich heritage.

A free guide to the Norton Street Heritage Trail, including maps and a brief history of each landmark, is available from the Ballina Visitor Information Centre, which is located on the corner of River and Norton Streets.

Ballina Missingham Farmers Market


Ballina Missingham Farmers Market is on every Sunday. They are the best way to do your weekly shop - buying fresh fruit, vegetables, and other produce directly from the grower.

At Farmers Markets and organic markets, customers can talk to the farmer directly about the produce and farming methods. Some farmers markets are incorporated into weekend markets, but usually there are regular separate week day stalls and stands at various locations throughout the region.
