Dunoon

Dunoon is located 20 kilometres from Lismore and is known as the macadamia capital of Australia. The macadamia processing plant sits on the outskirts of the village and produces delicious products sold here and overseas.

Visit the Tanglefoot Gallery that has a wide range of local arts and crafts. Pick up local produce from the Dunoon General Store or enjoy its impressive sports ground and club that hosts regional cricket and soccer games. Stop for a meal at the clubs restaurant offering indoor and outdoor dining.

Dunoon is the gateway to the Whian Whian State Forest and Rocky Creek Dam. As the water supply for Lismore, swimming is prohibited but enjoy a picnic by its shores or one of the easy forest walks.

Rocky Creek Dam


Patient nature lovers may spot a platypus at Rocky Creek Dam. The dam wall is 27 metres high, 187 metres above sea level and, when full, the dam holds 14,000 mega litres of water. The 29 square kilometres of catchment area include sections of Nightcap National Park, Whian Whian State Forest and revegetated farmland.

The dam has a platypus viewing platform, elevated boardwalk and pontoon bridge. There are picnic and barbecue facilities with wood supplied, benches, tables and children's play equipment.

Four walks are available, ranging from 1.2 kilometres (20 minutes) to six kilometres (two hours) in length. Water Dragon Walk takes you up the hill to the lookout. Platypus Walk goes alongside Rocky Creek and back across the dam wall. Cedar Walk takes you towards the edges of the Rous Water Rainforest Reserve. Scrub Turkey Walk passes through tall a variety of forest environments.

Protesters Falls


Located in World Heritage Nightcap National Park, Protesters Falls is a must see while exploring the Lismore Hinterland. The easy walk from Terania Creek Picnic Area winds its way through the bangalow palm forest to the base of the falls.

Swimming is not permitted in the area as it is home to the endangered Fleay's barred frog.

Protesters Falls and Terania Creek is home to the first successful anti logging protest in 1979. For more information please call The Lismore Visitor Information Centre.

Bexhill Open Air Cathedral


The Bexhill Open Air Cathedral is located at Inspiration Point, Bexhill, and overlooks the Corndale Valley with views of the Nightcap National Park in the distance. The panoramic view from the Open Air Cathedral makes it a popular spot for outdoor weddings or just a quiet place to sit and ponder.

The Bexhill Open Air Cathedral was built by the Bexhill Christian Youth Fellowship and dedicated on Palm Sunday 1958 as a place of Christian worship. The Cathedral has been maintained by the Christian Church for over fifty years, and both the Open Air Cathedral and the Church of the Good Shepherd which is only a few hundred metres down the road, are open to all branches of the Christian Church for weddings, baptisms, funerals and other worship services.

Nimbin Rocks


The Nimbin Rocks are volcanic extrusions of Rhyolite left over from the Mount Warning Tweed Volcano that erupted around 20 million years ago. As part of an eroded dyke of the volcano, Nimbin Rocks are located just outside the present day caldera wall about 20 kilometres from Mount Warning and three kilometres from Nimbin Village. They are an extremely significant cultural site to the local Bundjalung tribe who believe the rocks were home to the Nmbngee, or Clever Men. They were also the initiation grounds for young boys.

Djanbung Permaculture Gardens


Djanbung Permaculture Gardens is a superb example of earth wise living. Djanbung Gardens is dedicated to permaculture, ecological design and the development of human creativity and skills.

Djanbung Gardens was founded in 1993 as a purpose-built living, learning environment for permaculture education and permaculture demonstration. The gardens attract visitors and students from around the world. Many come to visit the Resource Centre or do a tour of the gardens, eco-buildings and working permaculture systems at Djanbung and Jarlanbah. Others participate in the training programmes, internships and volunteer programmes.

Djanbung Gardens is located one kilometre from the heart of Nimbin Village. They welcome visitors during their open hours in the Djanbung Gardens Resource Centre and offer self-guided (AUD5.00) and guided tours (Saturday at 11am AUD15-20.00).

Groups welcome and regular workshops are available.

Opera at The Channon


Opera at The Channon, is a unique cultural event that brings an afternoon of the joys of opera and song to the picturesque Coronation Park, The Channon, on the Far North Coast of New South Wales.

Organised by the combined Rotary Clubs of Lismore, Opera at The Channon invites guests to dress formally and enjoy a 'fine dining' luncheon under a grand marquee, purchase a barbecue lunch or bring their own picnic lunch. Following lunch, guests will be treated to an afternoon of fine music featuring a stunning selection of songs from popular operas, performed by world class entertainers.

Channon Craft Market


Australia's oldest art and craft market is held in the picturesque village of The Channon at Coronation Park on the second Sunday of each month.

There are 250 stallholders offering arts, crafts, fresh produce, plants, bric-a-brac, therapies and clothing. There are children's activities such as candle making, a jumping castle and rides, live music and buskers.

The Channon is a 20 minute drive from Lismore, in the heart of the Rainbow Region hinterland.
