Tabulam Scenic Drive

The drive starts and finishes on the Bruxner Highway at Tabulam. Being a half day drive, the distance travelled is approximately 55 kilometres, with 25 kilometres being unsealed.

The drive gives you views of the Clarence River and offers a stopover by this river half way through the journey.

Historically Tabulam is the home of the Light Horse Brigade, the Longest Single Span Timber Truss Bridge in Australia (161 metres in length) and Keith Cameron's Gallery where a disused silo has been converted into an imposing viewing tower and gallery and where you can admire his Sculpture walk park. This drive takes you to them all.

You will also travel through Fraser's Cutting, from where you overlook a boulder strewn section of the Clarence River.

Call in to the Kyogle Visitor Information Centre for details of the drive.

Clarence River Road Bridge

Bridges are not just functional, they can also be scenic and engineering attractions. Spare a few minutes to admire Clarence River Road Bridge.

Completed in 1903, the Tabulam bridge is an early example of a DeBurgh timber truss road bridge. In 1998 it was in good condition.

As a timber truss road bridge, it has strong associations with the expansion of the road network and economic activity throughout NSW, and Ernest DeBurgh, the designer of this type of truss.

DeBurgh trusses were fourth in the five stage design evolution of NSW timber truss road bridges. Designed by Public Works engineer Ernest M. DeBurgh, the DeBurgh truss is an adaptation of the American Pratt truss design. The DeBurgh truss is the first to use significant amounts of steel and iron, and did so in spite of its high cost and the government's historical preference for timber.
