Kandos Museum

In 1919, the first manager of Kandos Cement envisioned a proud future for modern Kandos leaving a legacy of his beloved Spanish Mission-styled church. The church is now Kandos Museum, telling the story of that thriving 20th Century town that made the cement that made Sydney. The general opinion is that he would have approved - come and see.

Ferntree Gully Reserve

Ferntree Gully is a highly scenic rainforest area 17 kilometres north of Rylstone. There are many walking tracks at Ferntree Gully that take you down into the cool narrow fern-tree studded valley floor, and/or around the top edge of the rocks where you can get an overview of the valley and the unusual rock formations on either side. A loop walk takes you through unique plant communities ranging from western dry sclerophyll to lush rainforest in and around a deep and narrow gully of eroded sandstone rock.

Plants to look out for include large fig trees, the Pandora pandoreana with its entangled maze of roots and rock orchids, some of which are unique.

Keep an eye out for a lyre bird, rare powerful owl, scrub turkey or a glossy black cockatoo. Echidnas, marsupial mice and several species of snake are also found here, along with grey kangaroos, wombats and wallabies.

Capertee Valley Bird Trail

The Capertee Valley Bird Trail has 19 easily accessible bird watching sites each marked by a numbered roadside sign. The bird trail lies within the traditional country of the Wiradjuri people.

Located on the western edge of the Blue Mountains near Capertee, and only three hours travel from Sydney, it is the widest enclosed valley in the world.

The valley is recognised internationally as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and one of the 50 top bird watching places in the world. There are approximately 242 recorded bird species, some endangered, such as the Regent Honeyeater.

Surrounded by the Wollemi, Capertee and Gardens of Stone national parks, and the Mugii Murum-ban state conservation area. Diversity has resulted in a proliferation of bird species finding refuge here. The valley is in a transition zone where the forest of the Blue Mountains give way to the woodlands of the NSW Western Slopes.
