Sandon

Sandon is located on the southern shores of the Sandon River mouth across the waters from Broomes Head. Accessible only via river crossing in a boat or, along the beach from Minnie Waters, Sandon is an isolated township with about 20 houses.

The beach along the river is great for fishing, swimming and relaxing. Stay at Sandon camping ground within the Yuraygir National Park. Along the drive to the campground you often see kangaroos and wallabies grazing by the roadside. You may also see one of the last flocks of coastal emus. Enjoy fishing, boating, canoeing and swimming in the Sandon River or four-wheel drive on the beach.

Brooms Head Main Beach


This breathtaking, unspoilt, uncrowded beach is nestled in a pocket of heath land surrounded by Yuraygir National Park.

A relaxing place for families and visitors of all age groups to get away from the hustle and bustle. Apart from the obvious pastime of just relaxing in this gorgeous setting there are a number of points of interest on and around this beach. The lookout offers panoramic views of the coastline and National Park. This is also a wonderful vantage point for whale watching. Pods of dolphins often play in the surf below the lookout. A leisurely beach walk will reveal many treasures washed up from the ocean depths or exploration of the rook pool at low tide may uncover a multitude of colourful marine life.

Squatters Rest Private Museum


Surrounded by vintage tractors, engines and farm machinery, there are 19 old style buildings, including a replica 1880 cook house at the Squatters Rest Private Museum. They make the best billy tea and bushman's bread with cocky's joy in the cook house.

Staff give give a guided tour of the fascinating range of rural memorabilia and then it's billy tea and bushman's bread, pianola for singalongs, great yarns and bush poetry.

Wooli Beach


If you're looking to enjoy water, wildlife and natural wonders, Wooli Beach is the place for you. This secluded beach is surrounded by Yuraygir National Park and offers a story book setting for rest and relaxation. This section of coastline forms the northern sector of the Solitary Islands Marine Park which protects the estuaries, beaches and islands from the Sandon River to Coffs Harbour in the south. The Wooli Wooli River can be negotiated for around 20 kilometres by canoe or boat. Kangaroos, emus, black-necked storks, brolgas, kingfishers, parrots and all manner of wildlife abound along the banks.

Holidaymakers can find many perfect fishing and picnic spots along the riverbank. The serious angler can chase bigger dreams from the beaches, rocks (the breakwalls are popular) or deep sea where local fishing charters are available into the marine park.

Wooli Wooli River


The Wooli Wooli River begins its journey in the Barcoongere State Forest. During its 34 kilometre length it passes through Newfoundland State Forest before meandering through the Yuraygir National Park.

Being encased by nature ensures that it is one of the purest waterways in Australia. It is one of the best nurseries for the Sydney Rock Oyster which can be purchased in Wooli along with fish, crabs and lobsters freshly harvested by the local fishing fleet. The river can be negotiated for around 20 kilometres by canoe and kangaroos, emus, black-necked storks, brolgas, kingfishers, parrots and all manner of wildlife abound along the banks.

Alumny Creek School Museum and Reserve


The Alumny School operated from 1872 until 1969. It is now a living museum of school life with significant pieces of equipment, school records and memorabilia reflecting various stages of education over these years.

It's a trip in a time machine back to your primary school days featuring many small details that may be long forgotten. The reserve surrounding the school is like a village green with picnic facilities, shady trees and sports facilities.

Brooms Head 3Bs Fun Run


The Brooms Head 3Bs fun run takes place in June each year and raises funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. One of the very best courses in NSW, run over five and ten kilometres through beautiful coastal scenery over bitumen, bush and beach.

Organised by the Maclean Lions Club and with generous support from the Brooms Head Bowling Club, this event is kilometre marked, marshalled and timed. It's an ideal training run for the Gold Coast Marathon weekend in July. A great event for all ages, including prams, walkers and families.

Australian National Goanna Pulling Championships


The offbeat, all Australian sport of Goanna Pulling dates back to the nineteenth century.

Contrary to the name, it's a test of strength between two people, whereby contestants get down on all fours and are linked by a leather belt over their heads, enabling them to pull backwards, tug of war style. Enter on the day for your chance to win cash prizes in the Men's and Ladies' Age and Weight Divisions.

The Goanna Pulling Championship includes many other events on the day including wood chop, men's, ladies' and children's novelty races, dog obedience trials, tug of war teams, market stalls, and food and drinks. Making a fun filled experience for the whole family.

Fun for the kids with a jumping castle, Old McDonald's Farm, Australian Reptile Show, bungee trampoline, giant ferris wheel, dodgem cars, and cup and saucer ride.

Clarence Valley Country Muster


Calliope, a tiny community north-east of Grafton will come alive during the Jacaranda Festival for the 2016 Clarence Valley Country Muster.

The stage is set for the fourth magnificent country music festival that in 2013 broke new ground on the NSW North Coast.

This year, country music superstar Adam Harvey will perform some of his greatest hits at the muster, as well as many other acts!

The muster will also serve up country hospitality including a canteen packed with mouth watering, home grown produce.

Prizes are available for people who would like to perform, including a AUD2000 recording package from Kross Kut Records for the best Walk-Up Artist.

Yamba Surfing Festival


Surfing NSW has combined the NSW open state shortboard, longboard and logger for men and women in 2016.

Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May - Open Shortboard State Titles (Men and Women)

Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 May - Open Logger and Longboard State Titles (Men and Women)

This event is based around the most elite surfers in the state and results will determine the Open Male and Open Female team for 2016 Australian Surf Festival in August at Coffs Harbour for the Surfmasters and Longboard divisions.
