Rose Cottage is a local gallery featuring local arts, gifts and a coffee shop and is housed in a restored traditional miners cottage. Open Tuesday - Sunday 10am - 4pm. Wallis Creek Pottery and Watergardens hold pottery making demonstrations, and also feature paintings, sculpture, landscaped gardens, ponds and picnic areas. Open Sunday and Monday 10am - 4pm, other times by appointment.

Heaton State Forest - Watagan Mountains


Heaton State Forest, part of the Watagan Mountains, is a beautiful forest encompassing a variety of visitor experiences and spectacular lookouts showcasing views over the Hunter and Lake Macquarie regions. Heaton State Forest complements the picnic and camping facilities in nearby Olney State Forest.

McLean, Hunter and Heaton lookouts offer outstanding coastal and mountain views. Watagan HQ camping area, an old forest worker campsite, is also available. And of course - being State Forest - you can bring your dog. And don't forget - your visit is free!

Richmond Vale Railway Museum


The Richmond Vale Railway Museum is a volunteer non-profit organisation, formed in 1979 with the aim of preserving the Railway and Mining Heritage of J and A Brown and the Hunter Valley.

The museum is located in the old Richmond Main Colliery site, four kilometres south of Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.

The museum runs trains on the first three Sundays of each month and each Sunday during school holidays. Other attractions include a mining museum, mining and rail exhibits outdoors, shady picnic areas, canteen, and souvenir shop.

The museum also offers mid week tours and special night time events.

Steam is the main power but can be substituted without notice with diesels (due to total fire ban days or operational issues).

Jetblack 24 Hour


The 2017 edition of the JetBlack 24 Hour will be held at Awaba MTB Park near Newcastle, the home track of the Hunter MTB Association! Race for 24 hours solo or in teams or pick one of the 6 plus 6 hour categories where you get to rest overnight.

This will be the first time that such a long mountain bike race will be held at Awaba and all its best trail sections will be linked up to an awesome 24-hour circuit - the race will be on good-old bush singletrails, the kind that will make your heart sing and your legs burn. It will take you deep into the rainforest on the foothills of the Watagans - the the cool and moist air will bring respite as the salad bowl spins you around and back onto those flowy Awaba trails that make it one of the most-loved mountain bike destinations on the East Coast.

Racers can sign up online and spectator entry is free. Great entertainment program with DJ and free kids race on a custom-built junior trail.

Lakefest


Lakefest is a celebration of Lake Macquarie's aquatic lifestyle and rich maritime history.

The Heaven Can Wait regatta involves sailing yachts, dinghies and skiffs racing around Lake Macquarie for up to 24 hours and raises money for Cancer Council NSW.

Lakemac Heritage Festival


The Lakemac Heritage Festival is a significant National event with boats coming from all over Australia and around 80 classic boats on display - steam, sail, motor and oared craft of all sizes. Boats must be of a design prior to 1975 but may have been built at anytime from any material.

Over the two days of the event, visitors are treated to model boat demonstrations and races, displays, market stalls, kids games, vintage farm machinery, an art exhibition, historical displays, vintage cars and trucks, entertainment and, of course, the "Quick and Dirty" boat building competition held on the Sunday of the festival.

The event culminates in a Grand Parade and Blessing of the Fleet at 3pm on the Sunday afternoon. The event celebrates the rich history of Lake Macquarie.
