Gresford

The town of Gresford was named by its Welsh settlers after a town on the Allyn River in North Wales. Before settlement the first Europeans to the district were timber getters who began extracting cedar in the 1810s. Prior to the colonial period the Gresford area was occupied by the Gringgai clan of the Wanaruah Aboriginal people.

Beckers Bridge over Webbers Creek

Bridges are not just functional, they can also be scenic and engineering attractions. Spare a few minutes to admire Beckers Brige over Webbers Creek.

Completed in 1902, Beckers Bridge is an early example of a DeBurgh timber truss road bridge. In 1998 it was in good condition. DeBurgh trusses were significant technical improvements over their predecessors. Situated in the Hunter region, Beckers Bridge gains heritage significance because of its proximity to 15 other historic bridges, each constructed before 1905. The Beckers Bridge is a representative example of DeBurgh timber truss road bridges and technically and historically important.

Vacy Bridge over Paterson River

Completed in 1898, the Vacy Bridge is an early example of an Allan type timber truss road bridge and in 1998 was in good condition.

As a timber truss road bridge, it has many associational links with important historical events, trends, and people, including the expansion of the road network and economic activity throughout NSW, and Percy Allan, the designer of this type of truss.

Allan trusses were third in the five-stage design evolution of NSW timber truss bridges, and were a major improvement over the McDonald trusses which preceded them. Allan trusses were 20 per cent cheaper to build than McDonald trusses, could carry 50 per cent more load, and were easier to maintain.

The Vacy Bridge is located in the Hunter region, and it gains heritage significance from its proximity to the high concentration of other historic bridges in the area.

Gresford Team Penning and Arena Sorting

Valley Team Penning was formed after a group of riders found there was a need for a club in the Lower Hunter/Newcastle area. The first event was held at Gresford in 2011 and was a massive success. Since then the club has grown with over 300 members aged from five up to 75 years young.

The event is run over two days with Team Penning on Saturday and Arena Sorting on Sunday. The aim is to provide a safe enviroment for all members and their families.

It is a western equestrian sport that has evolved from farm and station work separating cattle into pens for branding, doctoring, or transport. It is a fast-paced event that gives teams of three riders on horseback from 60 to 90 seconds to separate three specifically identified cattle from a mob and put them into a pen at the opposite end of the arena.
