Aberdeen Golf Club

Aberdeen Golf Course is a nine hole (18 tee) course set on the banks of the Hunter River in Aberdeen NSW.

The par 70 course provides a good challenge to all levels of golfer. Although some holes are quite short in distance, the challenge is provided by smaller than average greens which are long and narrow meaning supreme accuracy is required with approaches. The slicing golfer is slightly disadvantaged compared to straighter or hooking hitters as hazards or out-of-bounds fences line every fairway on the right hand side. A CCR of 66 is a reasonable assessment of the course but golfers new to the course do have trouble with the narrow greens on some holes especially the opening two holes.

No tee times are required. Just turn up on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday and be greeted by friendly Aberdeen members who are glad to show you around.

St Albans Anglican Church

St Alban's Church of England was built 1864-69 to the design of famous English Architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, under the supervision of E.T. Blackett and J.H. Hunt. It is unique as the only known church of his design to be built in Australia. In the 1880s the wooden bell tower and the fence, both designed by John Horbury Hunt were added. In 1914 the clock and bells were provided to the tower in memory of Archdeacon White.

St Alban's took five years to complete and was dedicated by Bishop Tyrrell on 17th June, 1869. It stands as a memorial to the faith of the early settlers of New South Wales.

St Alban's is unusual as the parish endowed an annual organ scholarship in the memory of Father Geoffrey, later Bishop Parker. It is awarded through competition carrying a cash prize of AUD1000, a generous amount for a regional parish.

Aberdeen Highland Games

The annual Aberdeen Highland Games take place on first weekend in July each year and are run in conjunction with the Scottish Australia Heritage Council's Heritage Week.

During the day a number of events take place together with stalls providing food and Scottish / Celtic displays all of which represent traditional Celtic culture and recreation. The games are a gathering of pipe bands, Clans, dancers, heavy event participants, state and interstate tug-of-war teams from Sydney and regional New South Wales to help celebrate the Scottish / Celtic history of the Upper Hunter. There are a number of novelty events for children.

Following the excitement of the Highland Games a traditional Scottish Ceilidh is held in the evening. The English Dictionary defines a ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) as "an informal social gathering, with songs, story-telling, music and dancing". The Ceilidh is always a great night out where everyone is welcome.

Visit the web site for further details.
