Martinsville is nestled at the base of the Watagan Mountain Range, on the western side of Lake Macquarie. Just off the F3 Sydney-Newcastle freeway, Martinsville is accessible by taking the Morisset exit off the freeway. The Watagan Mountains wilderness area is made up of National Park and State Forest Areas. State Forests of the Watagan Mountains

Watagan, Olney, Heaton, Awaba, Ourimbah and Wyong State Forests, collectively known as 'The Watagans' are part of a chain of State Forests which start from Ourimbah in the south and stretch north to Cessnock. These State Forests are considered nature's playground for the range of nature-based activities available in the area. These forests contain not only beautiful mountain scenery but have all the necessary facilities for day-trippers, bushwalkers, four wheel drivers and campers. There are also treetop adventures, paintball games and mountain biking in the area.

To get to the Watagans travel from Wyong via Dooralong Road and pick up the Watagan Forest Road. From Cooranbong travel via Martinsville and pick up Martinsville Hill Road or Freemans Drive and then onto Mount Faulk Road.

Olney State Forest - Watagan Mountains

Olney State Forest is in the Watagan Mountains near the Central Coast. Numerous free picnic, camping areas and walking trails are available in this family-friendly forest.

The Pines Forest Park offers a unique picnic setting amongst a former Pine plantation forest. The Pines, Turpentine, Casuarina and Olney HQ camping areas provide sheltered campsites amongst impressive native forest, and are perfect for families or small groups. Large all-weather picnic shelters are located at both The Pines and Olney HQ. The Pines and Abbotts Falls Walking Trails follow creek lines and feature areas of moist eucalypt forests, rainforests and rock pools.

To the west, The Basin Camping area is open and grassy with easy access and a flowing creek that can be used for swimming in warmer months. The Basin is suitable for large groups. Here, the Rock Lily Walking Trail features rock lilies and rainforest vegetation.

Dobell House

Dobell House is the home and studio of Sir William Dobell, one of Australia's greatest artists, on the shores of beautiful Lake Macquarie.

Explore Sir William's unique home with its original furniture, personal memorabilia and family mementos. Browse an extensive exhibition illustrating his life and work from the 1920s until his death at Wangi in 1970. Experience his studio just the way it was when he painted there. See what he saw when he painted some of his great paintings.

Listen to a 1963 radio interview in which Sir William talks about himself and his work, or watch a video program featuring another interview with him actually recorded in the House. Jetblack 24 Hour

The 2017 edition of the JetBlack 24 Hour will be held at Awaba MTB Park near Newcastle, the home track of the Hunter MTB Association! Race for 24 hours solo or in teams or pick one of the 6 plus 6 hour categories where you get to rest overnight.

This will be the first time that such a long mountain bike race will be held at Awaba and all its best trail sections will be linked up to an awesome 24-hour circuit - the race will be on good-old bush singletrails, the kind that will make your heart sing and your legs burn. It will take you deep into the rainforest on the foothills of the Watagans - the the cool and moist air will bring respite as the salad bowl spins you around and back onto those flowy Awaba trails that make it one of the most-loved mountain bike destinations on the East Coast.

Racers can sign up online and spectator entry is free. Great entertainment program with DJ and free kids race on a custom-built junior trail.

Rathmines Catalina Festival

October will see the Rathmines Catalina Memorial Park Association Inc. host the 8th annual Catalina Festival at Rathmines Lake Macquarie.

The festival will be one of largest yet with a large air display, a wide range of land based activities for families to see, touch and experience, sea planes, gliders and a lot of history.

At the former RAAF seaplane base at Rathmines, once the largest flying boat base in the South Pacific, a tightly packed and spectacular air show will have visitors in awe of breathtaking stunts and flying manoeuvres. Paul Bennet Airshows has created a program with 15 different aircraft and flight teams which will fly from mid morning until the end of the festival with the highlight being the Catalina Flyover in the afternoon.

The Heaven Can Wait regatta involves sailing yachts, dinghies and skiffs racing around Lake Macquarie for up to 24 hours and raises money for Cancer Council NSW.
