Lisgar Gardens

Lisgar Gardens covers an area of 2.4 hectares (six acres).

The site was originally purchased in 1917 by Max Cotton (1887 to 1967) from his brother Leo, specifically for the purpose of creating the gardens. In 1967, Hornsby Shire Council purchased the property, naming it Lisgar Gardens.

Built on a steep hillside, the gardens' different levels were created by the construction of sandstone block walls. By 1950, the gardens were planted with rhododendrons, azaleas, gardenias and other exotics in harmony with native trees and ferns, highlighting the seventy two varieties of camellias.

Some of the original camellias still exist in the gardens today and are now over fifty years old. The gardens now boast over ninety varieties of camellias, a covered pavilion for weddings and other celebrations, a shade house containing the fish ponds, a gazebo, three waterfalls, informal lawn areas, picnic tables, and a rainforest walk.

Lilian Fraser Garden

Lilian Fraser and her family moved to Pennant Hills after her father Charles purchased the 'Hopetoun' poultry farm sometime between 1915 and 1920. Over the years, much of the original farm was sold off as residential lots but almost an acre was kept for gardens surrounding the house.

As she approached old age, Dr Fraser offered her garden to Hornsby Shire Council, her final wish was for her garden be enjoyed as a public garden and park. The garden open to the public covers 3,426 square metres. Among the wide range of plants are some very special for their size or rarity.

This urban sanctuary containing rare and unusual plants, is open during daylight hours for the enjoyment of both young and old.

Wander through the garden, have a picnic or take a guided tour (by appointment only).

Rose Seidler House

Rose Seidler House, built between 1948 and 1950, is one of the most uncompromising modernist houses in Australia. Nestled in natural bushland, the house has panoramic views of Ku-ring-gai National Park from its glass walls and sun filled deck.

Restored to its 1950s scheme, Rose Seidler House incorporates the modernist features of open planning, minimal colour scheme, mod cons, appliances and labour saving devices that were new to Australia. Its original furniture is one of the most important post war design collections in Australia.

Rose Seidler House was the first commission for internationally renowned architect Harry Seidler. He came to Australia from New York expressly to build the house for his parents Rose and Max, who lived there until 1967. Awarded the Sulman Medal in 1951, it has been a very influential house, stimulating much social comment and intellectual debate.

The Northern Sydney and Central Coast Retirement Village Expo

The Retirement Expo has been setup for retirees who are considering making the move to a retirement village, or who are interested in gathering information about the many retirement villages, over 55s resorts and aged care facilities that are available.

Each expo provides an opportunity for people to meet with representatives from many different retirement villages and over 55s resorts, all offering different levels of care, all under the one roof, in a neutral environment and without obligation. These expos are totally dedicated to retirement villages, over 55s resorts and aged care.

For retirees, the decision to make the move from the family home to a retirement village or over 55s resort is one that many probably dread, and yet happily settled village residents frequently wonder why they have not made the move earlier.
