St Johns Cathedral

St. John's Anglican Cathedral is a rather unusual church with twin spires. The site on which the church stands has been used continuously for a house-of-worship since 1803. The foundation stone of the first church on this site was laid in 1799, during Governor King's term of office. It was the only church in the colony until 1809.

It became the church of Reverend Samuel Marsden, whom history has given the moniker 'The Flogging Parson'. This was due to his passionate detestation of sin and his conviction that Parramatta's morality could be preserved only by the most rigorous disciplinary measures.

The twin steeples were completed in 1819. The building fell into disrepair and it was found necessary to completely rebuild the church. Only the steeples and tower remain today as part of the earlier church. The north and south transepts were added in 1883 by Colonial Architect, Edmund Blackett.

The museum of Australia's oldest, most decorated Regiment in the mainland's oldest (1820), heritage listed barracks. Trace the evolution of the weaponry, uniforms and equipment of the NSW Cavalry and famed Light Horse - from horses and lances through machine guns and tanks to contemporary armoured reconnaissance.

With a retired Lancer as guide, hear stories of the Regiment's ceremonial duties at home and overseas as Vice-Regal Escort, and of its active service in the Boer War, in WWI as the First Light Horse at Gallipoli and Palestine, and in WWII in New Guinea and Borneo where it mounted what is to this day Australia's largest ever tank attack at Balikpapan.

View one of Australia's best Boer War collections, including handwritten first known versions of Banjo Patterson war poems; clamber over the collection of vintage armoured vehicles, and see the world from inside a 50 ton Centurion Main Battle Tank.
