Tighes Hill

Tighes Hill is primarily an industrial area with residential parts expanding toward Mayfield. A small number of mixed businesses are available on Elizabeth Street in Tighes Hill. However, the largest commercial centre near the suburb is the Mayfield shopping district. Tighes Hill developed from the construction of a bridge over Throsby Creek at the opening of the Ferndale Colliery in 1877. Within three years the suburb had a school, post office, church and stores.

Today, the area provides housing for industrial employees and cheaper living near the CBD. The Newcastle TAFE is located on Maitland Rd at Tighes Hill.

Miss Porters House

Miss Hazel Porter lived all her life at 434 King Street, Newcastle until her death in 1997 aged 83. Not wishing her home to be redeveloped, she bequeathed the property, its contents and endowment to the National Trust. The freestanding Edwardian terrace built by her father, Herbert Porter in 1909 has been little changed over the years. Entrusted to the care of the National Trust, it survives as a poignant insight into the homes of an era, and the quiet and careful lives of the Porter family.

The Porter sisters steadfastly retained their personal possessions and the Trust has been intrigued by the collection of clothing, fabrics, craft materials, linen and general household items that remain in the cupboards and sideboards. Miss Porter's House is a living home, offering you today, a rare and privileged visit into other lives and other times.

Light Up Newcastle

The Newcastle Rotary Clubs invite you to join in a special event to celebrate Chinese New Year and Light up Newcastle with red lanterns in February 2016.

The challenge set for this year is to "be a gift to the world" and the Rotary Clubs will provide a gift to seafarers visiting the Port of Newcastle and celebrating the maritime heritage of the City.

The Mission provides sailers with a 'home away from home' at the Seafarers Centre in Wickham. The lantern walk will raise money for a new upgrade to their kitchen.

Newcastle's Maritime Centre will also be a beneficiary of the event. Money raised will assist them to build a new entrance to its public cafe on the foreshore.

Newcastle City Council and Hunter Development Corporation have supported the event and it will be part of the Summer Tourism Campaign.
