Brewer: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Old Government House Parramatta

Standing in 200 acres of parkland overlooking historic Parramatta, Old Government House is Australia's oldest public building. For seven decades, it was the 'country' residence of 12 early governors of the colony, including Governor and Mrs Macquarie who preferred the clean air and space of rural Parramatta to the unsanitary and crime ridden streets of Sydney Town.

The central block of the house was built in 1799 by Governor John Hunter, however the house today owes most to Governor and Mrs Macquarie. Their 1815 extensions, designed by Macquarie's Aide, Lieutenant John Watts transformed the house into an elegant Palladian style residence.

Old Government House and Domain (Parramatta Park) is one of 11 historic places that together form the Australian Convict Sites UNESCO World Heritage property.

Parramatta Park

World Heritage Listed Parramatta Park is a must see for visitors to Sydney.

Colonists, convict and free, were first successful in growing sufficient food to feed themselves here. The park was too attractive to be reserved for cropping for long and was used by successive Governors as respite from the stresses of running a very large open air prison. Following a determined public campaign, the area was gazetted a People's Park in 1858.

Ever since then the parklands have been Parramatta's backyard!

There are two fun playgrounds and children can ride safely on the sealed off-road area. Tucked in beside the Macquarie Street entrance is a large formal rose garden which contains a rare collection of heritage roses.

History enthusiasts will want to take the curator's tour of the convict built, 18th century dairy building. Check out the park's web site for booking information and other events and festivals.
