South Gundagai Woodlands Walk

The South Gundagai cemetery contains one of Australia's rarest vegetation communities: White Box Woodlands.

A short self-guided walk with interpretive signs will help you appreciate the significance of this area. Spring to early summer is the best time to see the wildflower displays and it is also a great place to see many of the region's rare woodland birds.

A great little walk to relax and wander with the whole family!

Gundagai Memorial Cairns

There are two Memorial Cairns in Gundagai.

One is the Rose Inn Cairn situated on the Gundagai Golf Course on Middleton Drive. This Cairn is to commemorate the public house constructed by Thomas Lindley which was part of Old Gundagai that was lost in the 1852 flood.

Many explorers passed close to Gundagai on their way to Port Phillip Bay including: Hume and Hovell, Charles Sturt and Edward John Eyre. This is marked by Cairn in the River Caravan Park. This is also the spot where Sturt crossed the Murrumbidgee River for the first time.

Historic Bridges of Gundagai

The landscape at Gundagai is dominated by four bridges spanning the Murrumbidgee flats: the historic Prince Alfred Bridge, the timber Railway Bridge, and now the dual Sheahan bridges of the Hume Highway.

The timber viaducts are wonderful examples of early engineering solutions to crossing a major flood plain. Their national significance is recognised with listing by the National Trust. They are a spectacular latticework of wooden trusses, spanning the flood plains and river.

Follow the River Walk from Yarri Park - they are well worth a look. Follow the signs or pick up a brochure from the Visitor Centre.
