Designed in 1914 by renowned urban planner and architect Walter Burley Griffin, Leeton owes its existence to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Leeton has 102 hectares of public parks and reserves and many impressive, well preserved examples of art deco architecture. Walk around town to view the 21 buildings listed in the register of the Art Deco Society of New South Wales.

Leeton is also one of Australia's richest food producing areas. Make sure you visit a local winery or call in to the Leeton Visitors Information Centre to take part in their "Tastes of Leeton" demonstration.

Roxy Theatre Leeton


The Roxy in Leeton is an art deco building and was opened in 1930 as a cinema and a stage was added in 1933. The Roxy film screen is one of the largest roll-up mechanised screens in Australia measuring approximately 16 metres wide by 8 metres high.

The Roxy is one of a small number of two level cinemas in New South Wales, and has been classified by the National Trust. In its present role, is a multi-function centre combining concert, live theatre, films and community events with a capacity in excess of 800 seats. Films are screened on Friday and Saturday nights, with matinees during school holidays.

Tours of the Art Deco Theatre are available on request.

Tastes of Leeton


Tastes of Leeton presentation is held 11.30am daily at the Leeton Visitors Information Centre. Visitors will learn about some of the local industries here in Leeton such as citrus, walnuts, and rice. You will get to taste some of the products and also take away a few samples. The presentation takes about 20 minutes and would be of interest to families, travellers, and students. Group bookings are more than welcome.

Leeton Sunrice Festival


The Leeton Sunrice Festival is held biennially at Easter during the rice harvest. The
festival celebrates the importance of the rice industry to the community.

The five day event provides entertainment and family activities. Events include Leeton's Longest Lunch, the street parade, Festival on Mountford, Balloon Glow, skate championships, busking and street performers.

Leeton Eisteddfod


Leeton Eisteddfod is recognised as one of the most outstanding cultural events in western New South Wales. This event is a showcase of talent in music, ballet, speech and drama, literary, highland and line dancing. Leeton Farmers Market


The Leeton Farmers Market is an authentic farmers market designed by Leeton Shire Council in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Leeton, held on the first Saturday of the month. With a focus on paddock to plate production, the Leeton Farmers Market is all about providing the opportunity for customers to purchase fresh high-quality produce directly from the growers and producers.

Leeton: Travel Tips

Leeton Visitor Information Centre


The Leeton Visitors Information Centre building was erected around 1913 to house the Chief Engineer of the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission. As well as providing information on local attractions, it is also an art gallery and point of sale for locally made products.

View the Men's Shed handmade items or locally made jams, relishes and chocolates. Enjoy the Tastes of Leeton demonstration (11.30am daily) or simply relax in the gardens.
