Private Gardens of the Monaro

The spectacular Monaro High Country is home to some of Australia's most stunning private gardens, situated on large, historic merino sheep and cattle stations.
Located in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in south east NSW, one hour from Canberra, Private Gardens of the Monaro offer exclusive tailor made day tours for groups visiting three gardens and including morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

At altitudes of around 1000 metres, the gardens are "cold climate" with four distinct seasons giving fabulous autumn colour, spring flowering bulbs, leafy summery greenery and cold winters with frosty mornings and sometimes snowy days.

Access to the gardens is strictly by appointment only.

Private Gardens of the Monaro have three Autumn dates and three Spring dates available to book on a private tour- visitors can choose to self drive or travel by small luxury coach with guide from Canberra.

Cooma Monaro Railway

Train rides have been suspended until further notice, however there is signage available for a self-guided walk around the railway precinct.

Cooma Railway Station was opened in 1889. Rail services to Cooma ceased in 1988. Visitors can still experience the nostalgia of rail travel on a 1924 rail motor. The rail motor departs the historic railway station each weekend (days and times vary seasonally and depend on school holiday periods), and travels north to Bunyan or further north to Chakola.

Southern Cloud Memorial

The Southern Cloud Memorial is dedicated to the airliner 'Southern Cloud', which was Australia's greatest air mystery. On March 21, 1931 the three engine aeroplane disappeared without a trace on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne. It was Australia's first big civil airline disaster.

The mystery was finally solved 27 years later during the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme construction. On October 26, 1958, Tom Sonter a carpenter left his camp 15 miles from Happy Jacks and came upon rusted metal. The riddle of the Southern Cloud had been solved. The Southern Cloud lay on the South West side of the densely timbered mountain ridge of the now Kosciuszko National Park.

The Memorial is made of concrete wings 40 feet across that soar from the blunt apex of a triangle. A grill encloses the face of the memorial and the recovered engine parts of the Southern Cloud and other historic relics.
