Gunningrah: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Burnima - Historic Homestead

Situated six kilometres from the township of Bombala, Burnima Homestead was built in 1896 for grazier Mr Henry Tollemache Edwards by Frederick Young of Queanbeyan (builder of 'Yarralumla', residence of the Governor General).

The homestead is a Victorian Gothic style two storied mansion that comprises of 10 bedrooms, formal sitting rooms, drawing room, dining room, smoking and billiard room and servants quarters.

The six acre gardens are set out with a variety of trees from around the world.

This is a complete and fine example of a working Victorian homestead; such an atmosphere is created that once you enter the grounds through the formal carriage way you step back into the 1890s. The opulence of the homestead and tranquillity of the gardens place you in an era long gone.

Burnima Estate is two hours from Canberra and half way between Sydney and Melbourne, and makes a pleasant days outing.

Tours of the estate occur on the first Saturday of the month or by appointment

Crankies Plain Bridge over Coolumbooka River

Crankies Plain Bridge over Coolumbooka River is of state significance. Completed in 1892, it is one of the seven McDonald timber truss road bridges remaining in New South Wales. Timber truss road bridges were extensively used in New South Wales because of the high quality of local hardwoods and the shortage of steel during the early decades of settlement of the state.

Spare a few minutes to admire Crankies Plain Bridge when visiting the Bombala area.
