On the face of it, Jerangle is just another of those blink and you'll miss it villages. Blinking or no blinking though, a trip out to Jerangle is well worth the effort, if only because of the historical buildings and breathtaking scenery on the way out. One of the earliest known references to Jerangle was in Gazette number 45, dated April 6, 1850. In the Gazette a John Cutmore is listed as claiming the 'Gerangle' run of 17,920 acres and a grazing capacity of 4000 sheep. From there development continued, with the site where the village now stands providing a focal point for people on properties in the area. While the present village is not large, there are signs of it being more prosperous in years gone past. Buildings of significance are the Jerangle Public School which celebrated its centenary in 1992. Also contained within the village are the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church. The historic Cemeteries are a step back in time and give you an idea of the characters that once lived in the region. Jerangle may be a small village but there really is more than meets the eye.

Jerangle: Events

Truffle Hunting and dining

Located in the Southern Tablelands just outside the village of Bredbo, Macenmist Black Truffles and Wines are proud to have created a farming oasis. Just under an hours drive from Canberra you will be able to experience something new, different and definitely exciting. Head south toward the Snowy Mountains and in less than an hour you will be captivated by the wonders the region has to offer.

Truffle hunts take place on crisp winter mornings with a dog leading the way. When a truffle is found it is extracted from its subterranean home in true archaeological-style using small tools and brushes.

After the hunt it is back to the truffle shed to explore the fascination of truffles, partake of refreshments and indulge in truffle tastings. You may wish to stay on for a truffle lunch or if you want something extra come for an all-day event where you will experience firsthand the delights of truffle from paddock to plate. The all day events include a cooking class where their chef will show you how to obtain the best from your truffle.
