Old Adaminaby

Adaminaby is an historic town located north-west of Cooma. A trout fishing centre and winter sports destination, its economic life is built around tourism and agriculture. It is also a popular destination for horse riding and bush walking in the Kosciuszko National Park.

The present town of Adaminiby was created when the Eucumbene River was dammed as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1958. The old town was flooded and relocated and can still be seen in times of drought when the Eucumbene Dam waters are low.

The pristine lakes and rivers of the Snowies offer the best trout fishing in the State and the lakeside villages of Old Adaminaby and Anglers Reach offer magnificent lake vistas and relaxed accommodation.

Sixty two years after the launch of the Snowy Mountains Scheme by the then Governor-General, Sir William McKell, the current Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, travelled to Adaminaby on Saturday 15 October 2011 to open the museum that showcases this monumental chapter in Australia's history.

The Snowy Scheme Museum is a multi-dimensional insight into the impact on the nation of the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, highlighting achievements of the engineers, the workers, the machinery and the role the project played in the development of the modern Australian nation. This huge fibreglass structure was built by Adaminaby artist, Andy Lomnici, completed in 1973 and is an icon for the beautiful mountain town of Adaminaby.

The iconic sculpture has been completely refurbished by The Friends of the Fish Committee and after this full restoration, she can once again proudly take her place alongside the 144 other "Big Things" scattered throughout Australia.
