Coastal Walks - Bermagui

As the northern gateway to the New South Wales Sapphire Coast, few places have the spectacular seascapes, national parks and state forests that Bermagui boasts. The coastal walk from Wallaga Lake to the north of the town to Cuttagee Beach to the south, covers around 15 kilometres of unspoilt magnificent coastal scenery.

Amble along the clean sands and crystal waters of several mostly deserted beaches and follow walking tracks through the natural bushland admiring the local birdlife, fauna and flora. Stop and take in the breathtaking views at the lookouts at Murunna Point, Bermagui Point, Dickinson Point Headland and the Blue Pool. Paddle in the safe shallow waters of Wallaga Lake and Cuttagee Lake. Marvel at Camel Rock and the rock formations of the steep cliff faces. All this and more - with the majestic Gulaga Mountain as a backdrop.

Armands Beach Bermagui

If swimming and sunbathing in the nude is your preference, Armands Beach was declared legally clothes optional by Bega Valley Shire Council in November 1993.

From Bermagui, drive south 9.5 kilometres along the Tathra-Bermagui Road to Barragga Bay and turn left into Kullaroo Road. Proceed along the sealed road to the Armands Beach sign and walking track to the beach. From Tathra, drive north 38 kilometres along the Tathra-Bermagui Road to Barragga Bay turning right into Kullaroo Road.

Armands Beach was named after a man of French origin, Armand Lemmeric, who owned a farm behind Armands Bay and regularly swam nude at the beach. In the 1930s nude cricket matches were held at the beach.

Armands Beach is not patrolled and there are no toilets or facilities. Bring all you need and take away all you bring. Nudity is limited to the extent of the sands of the beach.

Blue Pool

Bermagui's famous Blue Pool is a "must see" Sapphire Coast attraction. It is located off Pacific Drive at the base of a dramatic rocky cliff face. A natural rock pool, it is washed with clean clear ocean water and is a wonderful swimming and snorkelling spot. A children's wading pool is incorporated at the southern end.

The steps down to the Blue Pool as well as the toilet, shower and change room amenities were reconstructed in 2010. At the same time, a new viewing platform was constructed which offers magnificent coastal views and is the perfect spot for whale watching.

The Blue Pool was awarded a Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor in 2015.

Camel Rock

Five minutes drive north from Bermagui along Wallaga Lake Road will bring you to the turn off to Camel Rock. This striking rock formation was identified and named by Bass and Flinders during the first mapping of the coastline of the colony of New South Wales.

Camel Rock is a popular scenic attraction with car parking, a picnic area under the shade of several large trees and toilet facilities. Camel Rock Surf Beach is well known for its great surf, swimming, with rock pools to explore, snorkelling and fishing. The beach is patrolled during the summer months and is well sheltered if there is a north easterly wind.

Take the walking track just before the viewing platform to Murunna Point, a significant Aboriginal place, which overlooks Wallaga Lake where it opens to the sea.
