Bismarck House

Admire the Georgian style Bismarck House, which was built by Anton Sattler in 1876 for a private residence and boarding house. In 1910 it became a private hospital servicing the people of the Bega Valley. In the maternity ward , Matron Murton helped deliver approximately 2,000 young Australians into the valley.

Bismarck House in 1940s was converted into small residential flats. In 1964 Roy and Coral Sheehan purchased the property then known as Thornleigh. Roy grew prize winning dahlias, roses and always had plenty of fresh vegetables to share with the tenants. Norm and Narelle Pearce purchased the property from the Sheehan's when they entered aged care.

The Pearce's had dreams of restoring the building and its surrounds to its prior glory. The restoration was completed in 2009.

Thornleigh on Newtown is a beautifully designed, versatile and comfortable licensed cafe, restaurant and function venue situated in heritage listed premises in Bega on the far south coast of NSW.

Tathra Oysters

Tathra Oysters are grown in the pristine waters of Nelsons Lake in Mimosa Rocks National Park. This family business has won numerous awards for their oysters.

The secret to their success is in their unique location. Oysters are very much products of their environment and no other oysters in NSW are grown in such pristine wilderness as the Tathra Oysters farms. No other commercial farming operations occur in the estuary.

Visitors are encouraged to call into the Tathra Oysters' shop where they can select from opened and unopened oysters.

They only sell oysters in prime condition, and therefore have a restricted harvest season. Generally oysters are available from December through to June, with the season being longer in milder conditions.

Fur seals and Fairy penguins from the colony at Montague Island often frequent the waters and are willing to let you be a part of their underwater world.

Tathra Beach is the only beach on the Sapphire Coast and Eurobodalla to be fully patrolled this Summer. Lifeguards will be on patrol, seven days a week, from 9am to 5pm until the end of February.

Tathra Wharf

Tathra is a coastal town rich in history and traditions of the sea. Tathra Wharf is still a centre of activity today, its historic timbers standing proud and creating a focus for visitors and those wanting to cast a line. It is the only remaining sea wharf on the East Coast.

While the Wharf stands proud above the waters, below is a wonderland for scuba divers and snorkellers. Fur seals and Fairy Penguins from the colony on Montague Island sometimes frequent the waters around the Wharf and are quite willing to let you be a part of their underwater world.
