Narooma: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Wagonga Picnic Area

Take the Wagonga Scenic Drive from the Princes Highway north or south of Narooma, and it will lead you down to Wagonga Inlet and this picturesque picnic area. This is an ideal spot to sit back and enjoy a picnic lunch, with spectacular water views.

There are a couple of short tracks from the picnic tables to the waters edge. The remains of the old jetty are still there, but this area no longer accommodates the large steamers as it did during the latter part of the 1800s.

The crystal clear, sapphire waters of Wagonga Inlet are a pleasure to paddle with views of the town and old forest growth on the shoreline. Paddle to the upper part of the Inlet to visit the historic cemetery and see the extensive oyster farms. Landing is possible next to the pontoon. Launch from Old Punt boat ramp next to the highway on the south side of Narooma Bridge, or take off near the cafes, restaurants and foreshore park along Riverside Drive where you can hire a kayak.

There is a barbecue/picnic area and playground available. Once you get out on the water the possibilities are endless with such a big expanse of water. Open kayaks and canoes should stay close to the water's edge as the vast area of water can be choppy on windy days. For more sheltered paddling head to Forsters Bay.

Narooma Lighthouse Museum

Come and discover the history of Narooma at the Narooma Lighthouse Museum, located at the Narooma Visitor Centre.

The key artefact of the Narooma Lighthouse Museum is the original light and optical apparatus from the Montague Island Light Station. This light station was the last in NSW to be manned, and is still the only remaining occupied light station on the NSW coast.

The light and optical apparatus were constructed by Chance Brothers of Birmingham, suppliers of most lighthouse equipment for colonial governments at the time. The light was first lit on 6 October 1881 and was used for almost 105 years, with its final manual lighting occurring 14 September 1986. The light and optical apparatus were removed from Montague Island when the light was automated.

A detailed interpretive display 'Mainland to Island' and a collection of items have been developed around the theme of this central piece.
