Round Corner: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Roughley House and The Pines

Roughley House is a colonial heritage listed homestead established in 1856. Unlike other museums, Roughley House denotes the changing lifestyle of one family over five generations, each generation leaving their own stamp.

Clive Roughley the youngest of five children lived in Roughley House until his passing in 2002. In 1984 without any direct heirs to pass on his family home, Clive decided to sell Roughley House and The Pines to The Hills Shire Council. This was provided that the property would become a time capsule of colonial life and the Roughley family's story.

An event that runs to assist in raising awareness and funds for the property is Jazz at The Pines, a live concert series bringing together some of Sydney's top jazz bands.

Viewing of Roughley House is available by prior engagement. Schools, seniors and coach groups welcome. Morning/afternoon teas can be arranged for an additional cost.

Lilian Fraser Garden

Lilian Fraser and her family moved to Pennant Hills after her father Charles purchased the 'Hopetoun' poultry farm sometime between 1915 and 1920. Over the years, much of the original farm was sold off as residential lots but almost an acre was kept for gardens surrounding the house.

As she approached old age, Dr Fraser offered her garden to Hornsby Shire Council, her final wish was for her garden be enjoyed as a public garden and park. The garden open to the public covers 3,426 square metres. Among the wide range of plants are some very special for their size or rarity.

This urban sanctuary containing rare and unusual plants, is open during daylight hours for the enjoyment of both young and old.

Wander through the garden, have a picnic or take a guided tour (by appointment only).

Lisgar Gardens

Lisgar Gardens covers an area of 2.4 hectares (six acres).

The site was originally purchased in 1917 by Max Cotton (1887 to 1967) from his brother Leo, specifically for the purpose of creating the gardens. In 1967, Hornsby Shire Council purchased the property, naming it Lisgar Gardens.

Built on a steep hillside, the gardens' different levels were created by the construction of sandstone block walls. By 1950, the gardens were planted with rhododendrons, azaleas, gardenias and other exotics in harmony with native trees and ferns, highlighting the seventy two varieties of camellias.

Some of the original camellias still exist in the gardens today and are now over fifty years old. The gardens now boast over ninety varieties of camellias, a covered pavilion for weddings and other celebrations, a shade house containing the fish ponds, a gazebo, three waterfalls, informal lawn areas, picnic tables, and a rainforest walk.
