Botany Bay, the name which raised fear in the hearts of the wretches awaiting transportation on the prison hulks on the River Thames, is where the white Australian dream began.

And, although Captain Arthur Phillip chose Sydney Cove for the establishment of the first penal colony, Botany Bay has remained the seed plank in Australia's march from remote British outpost to independent nationhood.

It is still the major gateway to Australia for the millions of visitors and migrants who touch down each year at Sydney International Airport and almost all Sydney's commercial shipping passes through Port Botany.

Much of Botany has been given over to industry and commerce, but its beaches and the bay itself make it a desirable residential area.

Botany: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Bonnie Doon Golf Course

Founded in 1897, Bonnie Doon is considered one of Sydney's best golf courses. It is the city's third-oldest golf club and one of the oldest in Australia. Located only 15 minutes from the city and five minutes from Sydney's international airport, the golf course at Bonnie Doon enjoys championship and Group One status. Slick greens, many with pronounced undulations, have long been recognised as among the best putting surfaces in NSW. Elevated tees and greens with sweeping views of the city are key features of the course design, as are the sand hills which bring unique challenges to many of the holes.

Whether you want to enjoy a drink with your playing partners after a round of golf or host a special occasion, Bonnie Doon's heritage-listed clubhouse provides the perfect environment. As a multi-award winning wedding venue, they can cater for all kinds of events and celebrations.

East Lake Golf Course

Unlike its neighbouring courses, Eastlake Golf Club is not a private Club and is open to members and the community.

The course is set amongst Sydney's Botany Wetlands and in recent years this golf club has transformed in multiple ways to become one of the city's best value and most respected golf courses.

Designed on two narrow strips of land characterised by sandy soil, wetlands and flat sections mixed with undulations, the course sidles past its more vaunted golf neighbours in an inconspicuous fashion. Moderate at 5,881 metres Eastlake's par 72 layout hides some of its distance in elevation changes where you have to think if taking the "big dog" out of the bag is the best option.

Eastlake offers great food and beverage options in the Clubhouse and on the course. They have a fully stocked bar with specials that offer you great value all year round.
