Rockdale

On the shores of Botany Bay in southern metropolitan Sydney about 12km from the CBD, Rockdale is a city of some 88,000 people contained within about 50 square kilometres, which includes the international terminal of Kingsford Smith Airport.

Rockdale was declared a city in 1995, a year before the area celebrated 125 years of local government. The city's diverse multiculturalism - 42% of its residents speak a language other than English at home - is reflected in the myriad ethnic restaurants in the area, especially paralleling Lady Robinsons Beach on the shores of Botany Bay.

Before white settlement, the Rockdale area was an important resource for the Aboriginal people, called Cadigal, who were often referred to as the 'water people'. They lived in rock shelters and caves, and in huts or lean-tos known as gunyahs made of grass and bark.

After Sydney Cove was settled, development began in this area in 1805, with small farms predominating. But, later in the century, Rockdale was seen as an ideal location for the establishment of country villa estates, although few remnants of these remain today.

Rockdale: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Bardwell Valley Golf Club Ltd

Bardwell Valley Golf Club is a picturesque course located close to the city of Sydney, yet it gives you the feeling that you are far away from the hustle and bustle. Bardwell Valley Golf Course was set up under an arrangement between Rockdale Council and Bexley Golf Club. The course was carved out of original bushland terrain, firstly operating as nine holes in 1964, then 12, and finally 18 holes in 1978.

Whilst only a short course (10 par 3s and eight par 4s), the course is cleverly laid out to minimise the impact of the hilly terrain. From the higher parts of the course, the city skyline including Centre Point Tower can be clearly seen. Beautifully maintained, the course is a popular venue for members, local residents, and many who travel some distance to enjoy the convivial atmosphere of both course and clubhouse.

Bard On The Beach - Greek Theatre

In 2016, Bard On The Beach (BOTB) will be presenting William Shakespeare's powerful and thought provoking The Tragedy of Hamlet, at The Greek Theatre, Addison Road Community Centre in Marrickville.

They are proud of their Sydney summer experience: classical theatre as it was meant to be: raw, traditional, honest and entertaining, and all while you picnic under the stars as the waves roll nearby. There really is no other theatre company like this.

There are two new venues around Sydney in 2016, and an inaugural collaboration with Spectrum Now Festival in conjunction with The Sydney Morning Herald and ANZ.

The season begins at Balmoral Beach Band Rotunda, running Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Then on to Dunbar Park, Avalon, in March, and to The Greek Theatre, Addison Road Community Centre, Marrickville, after that.
