Goulburn Island

The North and South Goulburn Islands are located in Auray Bay off the northern Arnhem Land coast. The islands are Aboriginal-owned and permits from the Northern Land Council are essential for all visitors. The Goulburn Islands are not set up for tourism, but intrepid sailors and fishermen may occasionally find themselves on their shores.

The Warruwi people are the traditional owners of the Goulburn Islands and the main language, Mawng, is spoken by about 750 people. Warruwi community is located on the southern tip of the south island and is a dry community (no alcohol). Fishing is the main pastime of local people, who are allowed to hunt the turtles and dugong prevalent in the area. The lifestyle is slow and relaxing and the climate is slightly cooler than Darwin.

Goulburn Island: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Bulloo River Walk

A stroll along the Bulloo River Walk is a tranquil way to appreciate the native flora and fauna of the Bulloo River Catchment.

Signs, bearing information about the plant species, are located along the walk. The Bulloo River is an ideal spot to relax under a shady tree and birdwatch whilst enjoying the natural sounds of the bush.

Keen birdwatchers are encouraged to identify as many bird species as they can, and jot down their findings in the Quilpie Shire Bird Diary at the Information Centre.

The Bulloo River is an ideal place to cast a fishing line and catch a Yellowbelly (Golden Perch) or throw in a yabby pot and snare some delicious Yabbies (fresh water Crayfish). You could have yourself one of the freshest feeds the Outback has to offer.

Steinys Traditional Mettwurst Tasting Room

Based in Tanunda, Steinys Traditional Mettwurst has been producing quality mettwurst and smallgoods for well over 20 years. They specialise in traditional fermentation and smoking methods to create a true German style. The original recipe was brought to Australia by early settlers.

Steinys Traditional Mettwurst is created using a fermentation process similar to beer, wine and bread, which destroys bacteria but also cures, creating a truly unique flavour. All of Steinys products are very high in protein and low in fat.

Steinys use the best quality ingredients - lean beef, pork and quality spices. Smoking products with South Australian Riverland Mallee timber gives them unique flavour and enhances the curing.

These are wholesome products, best enjoyed as a snack food, great for lunch boxes or with a glass of wine or beer. A great flavour enhancer to European food dishes, pasta sauce, pizzas and platters.

Steinys Traditional Mettwurst Tasting Room is open for visitors to taste and purchase products Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and weekends 11am to 4pm.
