Winnellie: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Charles Darwin National Park

Lying on Darwin's Frances Bay, Charles Darwin National Park protects one of Australia's most significant wetlands, important woodlands and local indigenous and WWII histories.

Explore the park's extensive network of walking and cycling tracks, which were developed in the war years. Enjoy a barbecue in the shady picnic area and then make your way to the lookout platform in the picnic grounds for great views of Darwin Harbour and its wetlands.

During World War II, this area was part of a network of military sites that formed Australia's front line of defence. Today you can see historic ammunition storage bunkers and testing areas that were built in 1944 and used until the mid-1980s. Explore a fascinating display of memorabilia from World War II and learn about Darwin's role in the Pacific War during your visit to one of these bunkers.

The Park area has a long indigenous history, too. Shell middens in the area indicate that Aboriginal people have lived in the area for thousands of years. Port Darwin wetland is a large and diverse ecology, and 36 of the Northern Territory's 51 mangrove species are protected in its system of inlets, islands and bays.

Australian Aviation Heritage Centre

Step back in time and explore Northern Territory heritage. The Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, located in Winnellie, Darwin, houses an impressive collection of the Territory's aviation history and reminds us of Darwin's frontier role in World War II.

A massive B52 Bomber dwarfs other exhibits, including Mirage and Sabre jets, a Spitfire replica, Wessex and Huey Cobra helicopters. Other exhibits include engines and armament as well as many photographs of Darwin at war, pioneer flights and record breakers. The development of the jet age is also depicted through displays and photographs.

To fully appreciate all the centre has to offer, allow yourself at least an hour and a half. Take advantage of the guided tours, video presentation and range of souvenirs.

Darwin Turf Club

Join the colour and excitement of a day of thoroughbred racing at the Fannie Bay Racecourse. As well as a popular place for a flutter throughout the year, the track is where the Darwin Turf Club hosts the annual Darwin Cup - the biggest day of racing on the Northern Territory calendar.

On the first Monday of August every year the annual Darwin Cup is off and racing. Over 8 days large crowds of punters dressed in their finest suits, frocks and fascinators flock to the racetrack for the Northern Territory's premier racing festival.

This historic meet has been running since 1956 when just four horses competed in six feature races for a record post-war prize money pool of £235. Today over $1.85 million of prize money is up for grabs during the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival.

Fannie Bay Racecourse is only 7 minutes' travel from Darwin city. The racecourse has a circumference of 1780 metres and is unique in its choice of surface - sand mixed with treated oil substance, as opposed to the traditional turf overlay.
