Gumdale: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Manly War Memorial

A Brisbane bayside soldier statue memorial has had a harsh life in serving to remind its community of the 16 local men who died in WWI. The original Carrara marble soldier statue above a plinth was unveiled by state parliamentarian WH Barnes MLA in March 1921. The designer and stonemason are unrecorded.

Names on the front of the plinth are those of men from Manly who died in WWI. The western face bears the names of locals who died in WWII.

Years of vandalism culminated in the marble statue being pulled from the pedestal and the head broken off in 1992.

A concrete replica replaced the statue in 2007.

Pinkenba War Memorial

During WWI, the Pinkenba wharves on the Brisbane River were the point of embarkation for many Australian troops, including members of the Light Horse. Not far from where soldiers were waved off, a solid cairn memorial stands remembering those who did not return.

The Pinkenba monument unveiled by His Excellency the Governor Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams on 16 August 1919, records the names of 42 men who enlisted from the Toombul district, eight of whom died.

This memorial features the bronze work of skilled Norwegian migrant Ernest Gunderson, also known for his war memorial commissions in Gayndah and Dalby. A plinth of cast rusticated-finish concrete blocks supports an obelisk-like bronze pedestal with Doric columns at each corner. This section contains the honour roll. A small dome sits atop a square platform with an upright artillery shell and a laurel wreath, all in bronze, projecting from the dome.

Pinkenba's war memorial is not intact: miniature bronze mounted troopers and soldiers have long since disappeared.

A WWII memorial plaque, set on a basalt stone, sits nearby, recording local enlistments and the four who died.

Jan Power's Farmers Markets Manly

Almost 30 years ago an idea was born that was to change Brisbane. Foodie, commentator and city doyenne Jan Power decided to forge the first Farmers Markets, putting pay to her passion for fresh produce, and her commitment supporting farmers and their livelihoods.

The first Jan Powers Farmers Markets came to colourful and loud life at the Brisbane Powerhouse site; and today, almost a full generation later, Brisbane is a city indelibly inked with love for Farmers Markets.

Jan singularly pushed City regulations again and again to sow the seed of Farmers Markets, and educate Brisbane of the provenance of their food. Now, there is a Jan Powers Farmers Markets every single Saturday somewhere in Brisbane, a market on Sundays in Mitchelton, and a weekly City Markets in Reddacliff Place that attracts some 5,000 city workers and residents!
