Narangba

About 30km north of Brisbane, just off the Bruce Highway on the way to Caboolture, and about 8km west of Deception Bay, Narangba is close to two big lakes - Samsonvale and Kurwongba. The Alma Park Zoo - one of the prettiest little zoos in Australia - is just a short drive away, too. At Deception Bay, a few minutes away by car, there are some lovely beaches, and great fishing in the estuary or out in the bay itself. Moreton Island National Park is a few kilometres offshore and ferry services run from Scarborough at the southern end of the bay. Narangaba is just a few kilometres south of Caboolture, administrative centre of the shire of the same name. From Caboolture it is a short, 30-minute drive to the bridge connecting Bribie Island to the mainland. Bribie is separated from the mainland by one of the great aquatic playgrounds and fishing paradise of the Pumicestone Passage whose protected waters offer sanctuary to the protected dugong and many species of birds. The Pumicestone National Park conserves the waterway and much of Bribie Island's natural rainforest and scenic bushland.

Strathpine Memorial Honour Board

Rolls of honour like the Strathpine Honour Board give a ready insight into a locality's proud involvement in WWI.

The honour board, designed by leading Brisbane metal worker Ernest Gunderson in 1921, lists in alphabetical order 76 names of local men who served in WWI. Some lettering is now missing, in its original state it clearly recorded whether a person was killed in action, wounded, died of illness or returned home.

The honour board, commissioned by the Strathpine Patriotic League, is made of bronze on a marble background with timber edging. It features cavalrymen with the Queensland state emblem and soldiers; two enamelled flags- the Union Jack and Australian flag; the AIF emblem; a cannon and a replica of Britannia, with the words 'For king and country'.

Gunderson's honour boards are unique to Queensland. Few remain as intact as this example, now found in the old foyer of the Pine Rivers RSL, now within the grounds of North Leagues and Services Club.

Memorials to the district's servicemen in later conflicts are located nearby. The First World War Memorial Gates facing Anzac Avenue were relocated from the Lawnton showgrounds in 1985, and lead to a memorial garden containing two trophy guns.

Pine Rivers Heritage Museum

The Pine Rivers Heritage Museum is set amongst the graceful landscape of Old Petrie Town, just to the north of Brisbane. Staff encourage visitors to explore the historic character of the Pine Rivers district through their permanent and ever-changing special displays.

The Museum is fully air-conditioned and there is always something new to see as they seek to build one of the best regional museums in Queensland. An animated theatrette provides an entertaining overview of the development of Pine Rivers.

Other displays include the Old Schoolroom, Yebri House, and supplying the Building Trade, while the stories of our explorers and early settlers provide colour and fascinating detail to their tale. One of their most significant displays is the Skyring Clocks, a collection of unique handmade 'skeleton' clocks which show their inside workings. Several times a year the Pine Rivers Heritage Museum creates or hosts new temporary exhibitions on a variety of themes.

Anzac Memorial Avenue, Redcliffe

Queensland's first bitumen road connecting Brisbane to a seaside resort was 18 kilometres from Petrie to Redcliffe: it was also the state's longest WWI memorial avenue.

Anzac Memorial Avenue, now simply called Anzac Avenue, officially opened for traffic on 5 December 1925. It was built by returned servicemen as a re-employment project, starting in December 1922, and funded through public fundraising and government contributions.

Enhancing the streetscape, and in keeping with a growing tradition of living memorials, trees were planted along the motorway from February 1925, 2,000 trees in all. Not all survived. Weather and roadworks took their toll over the years and some were replaced.

Original plantings include the Cocos palms planted at Petrie by Governor Nathan in 1925, a Hoop Pine planted at the Humpybong Esplanade corner of the avenue by Governor-General Lord Stonehaven and a Fig tree at the roundabout terminating the avenue near Settlement Cove Lagoon.

Anzac Memorial Avenue was one of about 200 treed avenues planted in the wake of WWI across Australia.

The RACQ was a major supporter of its development, aligning with the newly-formed Main Roads Board. In this, the project uniquely blended WWI remembrance with the first car-driven tourism initiative in Queensland.

Cast your eyes across the river and wetlands from the viewing platforms and enjoy the ambience of the natural environment. So much wildlife inhabits this area that the you are spoiled for choice, whether it is birds on high, sleepy koalas in the gum trees, crabs in the mudflats or a dolphin playing in the river channel, each day offers unique surprises.
