Lowood

Lying a few kilometres west of the headwaters of the Brisbane River, Lowood is just a few minutes drive from Brisbane's premier stillwater playground, Lake Wivenhoe.

Constructed in 1985 and 90km north-west of Brisbane, Wivenhoe is a vast stretch of water which attracts thousands of anglers, boaties and campers. It is safe for swimming and there are generous picnic reserves for day-trippers. The focal point for visitors is Comorant Bay, complete with a restaurant and an information centre featuring maps and educational displays. The bay takes its name from the shags which can flock so densely on the dam that they form a floating reef.

The Bos Camel Farm is at nearby Coominya. Lowood played a significant support role during World War II as the site of a training and fighter base for a number of Australian Royal Air Force squadrons and for the 36th Fighter group of the US Force. A partial bunker which doubled as an operations room can still be seen on the northern slops of Mount Tarampa.

Lowood: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Fernvale Murals

The Fernvale Murals were conceived as a community project to help re-establish pride and confidence in the town after the trauma of the 2011 floods. There are three murals located around the Fernvale Memorial Park along the Brisbane Valley Highway. The design of the murals is not intended to show the town exactly as it was, but rather to illustrate the life of the growing community. The buildings seen in the murals are taken from photographs of actual building which stood in Fernvale in the early days, some of which can still be seen in the town today.

Rosewood Railway Museum

If you head for a little place called Rosewood, tucked away in the Bremer River valley, the train is waiting for you on the last Sunday of each month. Rosewood is 50 kilometres west of the city of Brisbane and 18 kilometres west of Ipswich and is served by the electric train from Ipswich.

The town is home to the Rosewood Railway Museum that seeks to recreate the atmosphere of a typical Queensland branch line of the steam and early Diesel era. The Museum is an operating railway that includes a PB15 steam locomotive that hauls restored wooden carriages plus a variety of diesel locomotives and railmotors. The line is high in the hills above Rosewood so there are plenty of steep grades where the steam engine has to work hard.

The museum, part of the Australian Railway Historical Society Queensland Division, also has an extensive collection of restored carriages and wagons on display.

Trains run on the last Sunday of each month and the Museum is open as a static display on the other Sundays of each month. Cab rides in the vintage diesel locomotives are available around the main depot yard at Kunkala Station on running days.

Kholo Gardens

A picturesque retreat into nature seven kilometres from the Ipswich Central Business District is the peaceful Kholo Gardens at Pine Mountain. It's an unexpected delight to explore with its lush gardens, crystal clear lily pond, bush walks and open spaces. Giant Kauri trees and Hoop Pines planted by early settlers, rare birds and plants, and the nearby Brisbane River all make this a special place to spend some time. It's also a sacred site for the indigenous Jagera, Yuggera and Ugarapul People.

At this subtropical haven, you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the 400 metre walk through Tree Fern Lane under a natural rainforest canopy. The more energetic can try the steeper 800 metre Coal Creek Walk - aptly named seeing as the earliest recordings of coal in the area were made here in 1825.

Formerly the site of a water pumping station, Kholo Gardens has an historic well onsite as well as a charming little old church, relocated here in 1990 from Redbank. With that and a stunningly restored Queenslander nearby, you can see why this is a popular venue for weddings and other functions. There are also barbecues, picnic tables and public toilets.

The Workshops Rail Museum

The acclaimed, award-winning Museum should be on every Ipswich visitor's to-do list. Steeped in history - it was once the workplace of over 3,000 railway workers and visitors enter via the historic Timekeepers' Building - it merges the romance of yesteryear with the exciting technological breakthroughs of the present.

The old boilershop houses the museum, where you're dwarfed by beautifully restored locomotives and carriages, and where kids and kids at heart will marvel at Queensland's largest model railway featuring detailed real-life scenes of the state.

The interactive Nippers' Railway will keep youngsters enthralled for ages with activities such as driving a train and collecting tickets, and a popular exhibit for older ages is the Diesel Revolution where you take the controls of the diesel locomotive simulator. You can also soak up the romance of a bygone era walking through an historic refreshment carriage, or peer into the opulent Vice-Regal carriage to see how the Governor travelled.

Steam shop tours happen twice a day, and the place is packed during school holidays, with the popular Day out with Thomas programs running from Boxing Day to the end of January.
