Seventeen Seventy

Seventeen Seventy is a small and tranquil coastal town less than 2 hours south-east of Gladstone in Queensland.

The biggest attractions for holiday makers are the pleasant beaches, great fishing and places to explore. Peak holiday times are Easter and Christmas.

The town name Seventeen Seventy is named after the year that Captain James Cook of the Endeavour and his crew, landed on the shore here. According to his diaries, no Aboriginal peoples were seen but there was evidence of their existence with campfires and artifacts.

Things to do:

Round Hill Headland - see the anchor of the wrecked MV Countess Russell and watch the sun set over the water. There"s a memorial here to Captain Cook who set foot on this part of Queensland in 1770.

Turtles - lay eggs along the coastline from November to January

In the area:

Lady Musgrave Island - take a day trip to Lady Musgrave Island, a coral island with white sandy beaches. Go scuba diving or snorkelling to see coloured tropical fish and corals, or perhaps see nesting turtles and seabirds in season.

National Parks - both Deepwater National Park and Eurimbula National Park are nearby with native scrub, rainforests and beach and rock fishing.
