Illinbah Circuit

This park has been impacted by recent severe weather events in Queensland. Please check park alerts for the latest information on access, closures and conditions.

The Illinbah circuit is located in the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park. This stunning national park boasts extensive walking tracks along the McPherson Range, which allow visitors to explore the area's forests, creeks and waterfalls. Dramatic lookouts afford views over the Gold Coast, south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Lamington is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, which includes the most extensive areas of subtropical rainforest in the world. The Illinbah circuit track now crosses the river 12 times before reaching Illinbah.

The Old Cedar Road is sometimes in poor condition and the river crossings are often difficult because the frequent floods change the positions of boulders and track entrances. Usually the track endings on each side of the river are marked with an easily visible red tag on a tree.

Exploring the World Heritage rainforest in the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia is easy, with many of the parks readily accessible from major towns by sealed or graded gravel roads. The wide range of visitor facilities include kilometres of walking tracks; guided walking and adventure tours and various accommodation options.

Rainforest once covered most of the ancient southern super-continent Gondwana and remains the most ancient type of vegetation in Australia. Few places on earth contain so many plants and animals that are almost identical to their ancient ancestors. There is a concentration of primitive plant families, that are directly linked to flowering plants existing over 100 million years ago, as well as some of the oldest elements of the world's ferns and conifers.

South East Queensland's AUD395 Million Hinze Dam was originally constructed in 1976, later raised 15 metres in 1989 and recently upgraded in 2011. The large embankment and un-gated spillway across the Nerang River provides water security and flood mitigation to the Gold Coast.

The catchment area of 207 square kilometres includes the Numinbah Valley and Springbrook Plateau, which pools into a 3700 acre reservoir called Advancetown Lake. This lake provides recreational users with walking and horse riding trails and is a popular stop off for lycra-clad cyclists passing through the Gold Coast Hinterland.

For anglers with a permit and electric outboard motor (sail or paddle craft) this is a playground for hooking golden and silver perch, saratoga, Mary River cod and Australian bass from either The Western (Nerang Murwillumbah Road) or Eastern Boat Ramp (Little Nerang and Range Roads).

There are four picnic and barbecue areas with nearby playgrounds for the kids and onlookers, plus a state-of-the-art educational interpretive centre perched above the parklands and lake.
