The Spit: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Gold Coast Oceanway

Even die-hard Gold Coast fans may not realise this but there is an official section of the coast known as the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 36-kilometre network of pathways which connects The Spit at the north to Point Danger in the south.

This innovative initiative is actually a series of sections which range up to four kilometres long and are popular with walkers and cyclists. There's accessible viewing platforms for people with disabilities and the entire route is serviced by the local Surfside Buses. With salt in your hair enjoy blue ocean waves, golden sandy beaches and green dunes.

You'll encounter birds, dolphins, fish and whales along this award-winning route popular with those who like to swim, fish, sail and sunbake. There's also plenty of public facilities such as barbecues and toilets along the way. So take your time, breathe, relax and enjoy as you connect the dots between the Gold Coast Seaway and Coolangatta.

Harley Park

Why not spend a lazy Sunday on the Broadwater and visit Harley Park? Harley Park is truly one of the greatest parks on the Coast. Magical Broadwater views, a fantastic ship themed kids playground and heaps of shaded picnic tables make this a popular location for local residents.

Why not really kick back? Bring along a picnic rug and relax under the shady trees. There are two playgrounds, with the nautical themed ship playground to the south, and the climbing inspired playground with poles, ropes, ladders and a flying fox to the north. The kids will be kept happy with two very different play options!

No trip to the Broadwater is complete without a swim! The Ian Dipple Lagoon is even flood lit in the evenings! The sandy areas are perfect for building sandcastles and frolicking along the foreshore. For those keen fishermen, the area also provides access to a boat ramp and fishing spots.

They are privileged to call home parks such as Harley, where families can spend an entire day out, with lots of fun and activities for all ages. Go on, get out there and enjoy the beautiful Gold Coast weather they all share!

Scottish Prince Dive Site

The Scottish Prince, 800 metres off the Gold Coast's Southport Spit, features the wreck of a three steel-masted, 64 metre iron barque ship. The Scottish Prince sank as it was sailing from Glasgow, Scotland to Brisbane with a cargo of whiskey, mousetraps, linen and other assorted cargo, with only the hull of the ship remaining. These days, the Scottish Prince is covered in soft corals and sponges, making it a haven for crayfish, shovelnose rays, brown-banded catsharks and wobbegong sharks, and other tropical fish. There isn't much access to the inside of the wreck, however a variety of marine life will pop their heads out to say hello. The Scottish Prince is protected under the Commonwealth Historic Shipwreck Act, so make sure you take nothing but photos and memories.

Gold Coast Fishermens Co-operative Limited

Established in 1970, the Gold Coast Fishermen's Co-Operative was one of the first developments on the Spit at Main Beach.

The fishing fleet consists of Prawn Trawlers, Tuna Long Liners and a Spanner Crab vessel, which all operate in the pristine waters off the Gold Coast. These vessels return to port most days loaded with the freshest seafood available for sale direct from the boat, often by the person who caught it.

The complex consists of floating pontoons, which enables buyers to access the vessels direct to purchase fresh seafood, at extremely affordable prices.

They have been operating this retail venture since 2006 and offer their customers the 'freshest catch' possible. All product sold is caught directly by the vessels. They are open from 7.00 a.m. until sold out, making mornings a preferred time to visit them.

They welcome locals and tourists alike and are keen to share knowledge of their fishing operations and seafood with you.

Come on down and have a chat and enjoy the freshest seafood they have to offer.
