Perched high on the red, fertile soil of Buderim Mountain above the Sunshine Coast, Buderim might be small, but no town or city in the state can match it for vibrant colour. The colour flows from the bougainvillea, poinciana, frangipani and hibiscus, which adorn just about every garden in town. Although the area's prosperity has been built on timber, sugar, citrus, coffee and bananas, the name of modern Buderim is synonymous with ginger, which is marketed directly in every conceivable form. You can taste the fruits of the good earth at the markets or many of the local culinery establishments. The link to the timber-getting past is preserved in the faithfully restored cottage built from hewn cedar and beech by pioneer John Kerle Bennett in 1876. The hinterland in which Buderim is set is sprinkled with a number of parks and reserves, which give the visitor a glimpse of the original vegetation in the area. The parkland within the area includes Mooloolah River National Park, where the wallum heathland bursts into a riot of colour in spring, Buderim Forest Park, with its signature waterfalls and boardwalk, and the beautiful Foote Sanctuary. Distance from Brisbane (State Capital): 90 Kilometres.

Inviting Well-being Techniques for Balance and Flourishing Dr B Alan Wallace Innovation Centre USC

Well-being is a skill that can be learned. Just as people can use diet and exercise to improve physical health, they can also train in techniques that increase mental health and resilience.

Some of these techniques have stood the test of time in ancient contemplative traditions and more recently stood the test of scientific rigour. Modern psychology and neuroscience have found some of these ancient techniques to be critical in cultivating twenty-first century well-being.

In this workshop, you will learn about these techniques, how to implement them, and what benefits to expect from practising them. For decades Alan Wallace has pioneered the exploration of the common ground of science and contemplative traditions and teaches how to successfully harnesses the full potential of both.

Venue: Innovation Centre, University of the Sunshine Coast. The Innovation Centre is the very first building on the right as you enter the university campus. Please note: You will need to pay for a days parking at USC, which is AUD5. Each car-park has a pay machine. Tickets do not need to be displayed (computerised system).

Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival

The second annual Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival is back this September, kicking off the start of Spring with a sensory feast celebrating the hottest contemporary Australian and international bands and visual artists.

This one day festival has a home on the old Horton Park Golf Course, and they're transforming the manicured fairways and greens again into a cultural Oasis, hidden away (some of the locals don't even know it's there!) but smack bang in the middle of Maroochydore.

They're an open-air exhibition experience moving beyond your standard festival fare. With a no-clash-mantra, a beautifully alluring natural amphitheatre, Champagne and Oyster Garden, culinary delights and a massive cash bar, this 'festival for the punter' will keep your hunger for world-class art totally satisfied.

Meditation/Discussion Wednesdays with Lindsay Pratt

Busy? Stressed? Want to learn to Meditate? Or sit regularly with others? A meditation practice will enable you to get your life moving in rich, full and meaningful ways. While some people turn to Tibetan meditation to slow down an increased heart rate or better control their blood pressure, others enjoy the mindfulness, awareness, and reduced stress that come with this practice.

Join thejm for a guided meditation and discussion on Wednesday evenings in Maroochydore. Your donations help them to keep this program running.

Established in 1974, Chenrezig Institute is a centre for Buddhist study, meditation, retreat, and practice nestled in the foothills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Today, the Institute is home to a Tibetan Geshe (Lama), a large community of ordained Sangha (monks and nuns), students, residents, volunteers, retreatants, and guests. Apart from the formal study programmes, Chenrezig Institute is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to spend a few hours, days or weeks.

Stroll along the bush paths, wander in the formal garden, sip espresso in the caf?, have a vegetarian meal, drop in for a meditation class or teaching, or just sit and listen to life.
