Kybong: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Woondum National Park

Woondum National Park is a popular retreat in which tall, wet eucalypt forest and subtropical rainforest surround rocky creeks. Parts of the national park are regenerating after being logged as recently as the late 1990s. Some areas formerly used as banana farms are being reforested with eucalypt plantations. Picnic beside cool rock pools, among granite boulders and shady green forests, where Boulder and Woondum creeks meet. Stroll along a short walk featuring large turpentine trees and involving a rock hop across Boulder Creek. Explore diverse forest types on the four wheel drive forest road. Learn more about the areas timber industry at the Woodworks Museum on the Bruce Highway at Gympie.

Art at Amamoor Lodge with Kym Barrett

Make your mark using charcoal and paint, with an option to 'taste' cold wax and charcoal techniques.

Using a range of drawing materials on paper, we will explore some basic techniques of representing landscape elements. Then, we will draw using a more expressive approach and experience the freedom of spontaneous mark-making. This will open up lots of possibilities to express yourself with your own unique marks.

Kym is an award winning artist and qualified teacher living in South-east Queensland. She is inspired by the natural world and how the human experience echoes its processes. She aspires to live, create and teach from a place of freedom and honesty and is always keen to share her knowledge and inspire other artists to find their own creative voice.

Mary River Festival

The Mary River Festival, held each year in Kandanga in early November has acquired a reputation of being one of the friendliest, most laid back festivals you'd find, with a great mix of top music, art, kid's activities and much much more.

This festival runs on a not for profit basis with an incredibly lean budget, through the generous involvement of local community groups, as well as a number of individuals, and enjoys wonderful support from musicians and participants.

As well as the sense of community though, what really powers this festival is the exuberance unleashed in 2009, after Peter Garrett gave the federal thumbs-down on the Traveston Crossing Dam proposal. It was that enormous relief and the grabbing in both hands of the ongoing environmental stewardship of the Mary River that runs through every part of this festival.
