Woondum National Park


Woondum National Park is a popular retreat in which tall, wet eucalypt forest and subtropical rainforest surround rocky creeks. Parts of the national park are regenerating after being logged as recently as the late 1990s. Some areas formerly used as banana farms are being reforested with eucalypt plantations. Picnic beside cool rock pools, among granite boulders and shady green forests, where Boulder and Woondum creeks meet. Stroll along a short walk featuring large turpentine trees and involving a rock hop across Boulder Creek. Explore diverse forest types on the four wheel drive forest road. Learn more about the areas timber industry at the Woodworks Museum on the Bruce Highway at Gympie.

Owen Guns Museum


Owen Guns Museum is located on the southern fringe of Gympie just off the Bruce Highway and is the largest gun museum in the southern hemisphere.

Housing in excess of 3,000 firearms from Waterloo, The Wild West, the Boer War. Also guns from the 55 days at Peking, the American Civil War, the Zulu Wars and guns from all the way back to when those Americans rebelled against the Crown in 1775.

Lake Alford Recreational Park


Lake Alford Recreational Park is located at the southern entry into Gympie. At the entrance to the park is the "Goldminer's Monument" which commemorates the gold miners who saved Queensland. Gold was discovered in Gympie in 1867 at a time when Queensland was in severe economic depression.

The park has wonderful facilities including all abilities playground, barbecue facilities, public amenities, Visitor Information Centre, off the leash dog park, and plenty of off street parking for caravans and RVs.

An abundance of bird life at the park is evident with feeding of the ducks a favourite activity for the kids. On the first, third and fifth Sunday of each month the Gympie Museum Markets are held. Located on the north eastern edge of the park is the Gympie Gold Mining Museum which also has a cafe attached.

Gold Panning, Deep Creek


In 1867 a discovery of alluvial gold in a gully near the Mary River began the first major gold rush in Queensland and resulted in the establishment of the mining town of Gympie.

Today visitors to the region can still visit and try their luck in the gold-bearing gully in the town at the Deep Creek Fossicking Area. Located at the southern entrance to Gympie between the Bruce Highway and Brisbane Road. From Brisbane Road turn into River Road and Graham Street and turn right into Victoria Street.

Fossicking Licences are available online or at the Lake Alford Visitor Information Centre. Equipment hire is also available from the Centre (picks/shovels and pans).

A great family activity at minimal cost.

Mothar Mountain Rockpools


Looking for a relaxing, sheltered place to while away some hours, you can't go past the Mothar Mountain Rock Pools. Located in the Woondum National Park, about a 20 minutes, 16 kilometres drive from Gympie's Central Business District, the Mothar Mountain Rock Pools day area provides the perfect family friendly location for a barbecue or picnic. Tables, wood fire barbecue, water and public amenities are all provided for your use on site. On a hot day immerse yourself into the pools to cool off.

Set amongst a mixture of tall Eucalypts and rainforest you can take the opportunity to relax and unwind to the sound of water gently flowing over ancient granite outcrops. Or if you are feeling more energetic, enjoy one of the nature walks. There is a short 500 metre (20 minute) forest walk or a rather more serious 3.5 kilometre (2 hour) walk to explore.

The Gympie Regional Gallery is housed in the heritage listed School of Arts Building designed by architect Hugo Du Rietz and built in 1905.

Gympie Music Muster


The Gympie Music Muster is Australia's favourite outdoor country music and camping festival.

Held in the beautiful and normally peaceful Amamoor Creek State Forest Park, this iconic Aussie music festival brings music and mateship together under one big open roof, offering an experience like no other. The 2018 Gympie Music Muster will be held over four days from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 August in one of Queensland's most beautiful National State Parks, with over 50 hectares of well maintained, planned camping facilities, plenty of hot showers and toilets, and a central entertainment precinct.

Located just 40-kilometres south-west of Gympie, it's an easy drive two hours north of Brisbane, and only 45 minutes from stunning Noosa and heritage listed Fraser Island.

Make 2018 the year you must do the Muster! and remember "There are no strangers at the Muster, just friends you haven't met yet".

There is something for everyone on the first weekend in May as the Gympie Garden Expo comes alive with fascinating plant displays.
It hosts one of the states largest collection of orchids with its annual competition.
