Woondum National Park


Woondum National Park is a popular retreat in which tall, wet eucalypt forest and subtropical rainforest surround rocky creeks. Parts of the national park are regenerating after being logged as recently as the late 1990s. Some areas formerly used as banana farms are being reforested with eucalypt plantations. Picnic beside cool rock pools, among granite boulders and shady green forests, where Boulder and Woondum creeks meet. Stroll along a short walk featuring large turpentine trees and involving a rock hop across Boulder Creek. Explore diverse forest types on the four wheel drive forest road. Learn more about the areas timber industry at the Woodworks Museum on the Bruce Highway at Gympie.

Lake Alford Recreational Park


Lake Alford Recreational Park is located at the southern entry into Gympie. At the entrance to the park is the "Goldminer's Monument" which commemorates the gold miners who saved Queensland. Gold was discovered in Gympie in 1867 at a time when Queensland was in severe economic depression.

The park has wonderful facilities including all abilities playground, barbecue facilities, public amenities, Visitor Information Centre, off the leash dog park, and plenty of off street parking for caravans and RVs.

An abundance of bird life at the park is evident with feeding of the ducks a favourite activity for the kids. On the first, third and fifth Sunday of each month the Gympie Museum Markets are held. Located on the north eastern edge of the park is the Gympie Gold Mining Museum which also has a cafe attached.

Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum


Gympie's Gold Mining and Historical Museum showcases not only Gympie's rich gold mining history but also other aspects of the region's past era including steam machinery, agricultural, dairying, vehicles, gemstone and shell collections.

Andrew Fisher House (named after Australia's second Labour Prime Minister 1908-1915) is part of the Museums collection of historical buildings housed with period furniture. Also the award winning Military Collection of the Fifth Light Horse Regiment which includes military equipment and memorabilia of all sons and daughters of the Gympie area that went to war.

Try your luck at the Museum's Gold Panning and take home a specimen of Gympie Gold - a great time for the whole family. Tour groups welcome.

Banyandah Alpacas


Banyandah Alpacas welcomes local families and tourists to pet and feed the friendly alpacas between 10am and 4 pm on Wednesdays and weekends.. Bus/coach tours are welcome any day by prior arrangement. Hot water is provided for those tour groups wishing to bring their own refreshments, but Zesty Edibles at Gunabul Homestead, also in Power Road, provides lunches and teas in a tranquil setting if preferred. Dawn gives an interesting talk about alpacas to tour groups.

The on-farm retail shop stocks a wide range of products fashioned from alpaca fleece as well as unprocesed alpaca fleece, both suri and huacaya, tops and yarn made from Banyandah's alpacas for discerning crafters.

Banyandah Alpacas sells animals, breeding females, some with cria at foot, stud males, guardians, grasseaters and pets, all at competitive, realistic prices. Many of Banyandah's alpacas have been ribbon winners at shows.

Twice yearly Dawn conducts Alpaca Management Days for potential alpaca owners and new owners to assist them in the management and healthcare of their alpacas. Educational days can be individually designed for school groups.

Banyandah is a WWOOFer Host and welcomes WWOOFers from around the world to help with the management of the animals and the paddocks.

Gold Panning - Deep Creek


In 1867 a discovery of alluvial gold in a gully near the Mary River began the first major gold rush in Queensland and resulted in establishment of the mining town of Gympie.

Today visitors to the region can still visit and try their luck in the gold-bearing gully in the town at the Deep Creek Fossicking Area. Located at the southern entrance to Gympie between the Bruce Highway and Brisbane Road. From Brisbane Road turn into River road and Graham St and turn right into Victoria St.

Fossicking Licences are available online or at the Lake Alford Visitor Information Centre. Equipment hire is also available from the Centre (picks/shovels and pans)

Gympie Music Muster


The Gympie Music Muster is Australia's favourite outdoor country music and camping festival.

Held in the beautiful and normally peaceful Amamoor Creek State Forest Park, this iconic Aussie music festival brings music and mateship together under one big open roof, offering an experience like no other. The 35th Gympie Music Muster will be held over 4 days from 25th to Sunday 28th August 2016 in one of Queensland's most beautiful National State Parks, with over 50 hectares of well maintained, planned camping facilities, plenty of hot showers and toilets, and a central entertainment precinct.

Located just 40-kilometres south-west of Gympie, it's an easy drive 2-hours north of Brisbane, and only 45minutes from stunning Noosa and heritage listed Fraser Island.

Colin's workshops are aimed at people with a serious interest in photography - people who enjoy capturing their world in camera and who are looking to develop and enhance their skills and knowledge. The workshop is essentially concerned with introducing students to the creative techniques of photography.

For many years Colin has been one of Australia's most prominent Fashion and Advertising Photographers, working on many major national and international accounts. He freelanced extensively for numerous leading fashion magazines 'Vogue', 'Dolly', 'Cleo', etc. producing numerous covers and fashion spreads.

A digital SLR camera and a tripod is required. Colin will help students to become masters of their cameras and to employ them in the most imaginative and innovative ways.

Two workshops are offered the first addressing night and low light situations while the second focuses on making the most of morning and daylight.

Destination Gympie Region Visitor Information Centre (Lake Alford) is located at the southern entry to Gympie on the Bruce Highway.

This accredited visitor information centre offers a one stop shop for travel information including maps, brochures, and offers free wi-fi internet access. An extensive range of Gympie regional produce is also available for sale, along with souvenirs and light refreshments. Fossicking Licences for the state of Queensland can be purchased at the Centre. Staffed by skilled and knowledgeable locals, the Lake Alford Visitor Information Centre provides advice on the things to see and do in the Gympie Region including Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, Cooloola National Parks, Fraser Island, Kilkivan, Goomeri and the Mary Valley.

Lake Alford provides a wonderful rest stop for drivers with ample parking, all abilities play ground, barbecue and picnic facilities, toilets and an off the dog leash park.
