Pomona

The 439 metre Mt Cooroora dominates this small, Sunshine Coast hinterland town in more ways than one. Not only does it cast a constant shadow on the village, but each July it draws some of the world's finest endurance athletes to Pomona for the King of the Mountain race and festival.

At the other end of the social spectrum, Pomona claims Queensland's oldest, continuously-operating cinema, the Majestic Theatre. The Majestic, which is approaching its centenary, also houses a cinema museum and hosts an annual film festival.

Lake Cootheraba, 18 km to the north, is the saltwater lake on the Noosa River where Eliza Fraser was held captive by local Aborigines for two months after surviving the shipwreck of the Stirling Castle on Fraser Island in 1836.

Today the Noosa Heads hinterland is rapidly becoming a magnet for people looking for a bush retreat that not only offers bushland privacy but proximity to "civilisation". The Pomona region, with its secluded home sites just 25 minutes from the beach and within commuting distance of Brisbane, fits the bill.

Pomona: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Eumundi Markets

The Eumundi Market is Australia's biggest and best art, craft and produce market, held every Saturday and Wednesday of the year (rain, hail or shine) in the heart of the charming historic hinterland town of Eumundi.

Established back in 1979, the world-renowned Eumundi Markets is like an outdoor gallery, with towering heritage listed fig trees rising above the 500 plus stalls.

The market's policy of 'make it, bake it, sew it or grow it' ensures quality products and the very best of locally produced goods. You will discover original artworks, sculptures, and furniture, handmade toys, homewares, and skincare, cutting edge fashion and jewellery by local designers, as well as fresh local produce and fabulous food to enjoy while you explore Eumundi.

There is always a stellar line-up of world-class musicians and talented street performers, as well as face painters, and alternative therapists offering massages, palm readings and more.

Mothar Mountain Rockpools

Looking for a relaxing, sheltered place to while away some hours, you can't go past the Mothar Mountain Rock Pools. Located in the Woondum National Park, about a 20 minutes, 16 kilometres drive from Gympie's Central Business District, the Mothar Mountain Rock Pools day area provides the perfect family friendly location for a barbecue or picnic. Tables, wood fire barbecue, water and public amenities are all provided for your use on site. On a hot day immerse yourself into the pools to cool off.

Set amongst a mixture of tall Eucalypts and rainforest you can take the opportunity to relax and unwind to the sound of water gently flowing over ancient granite outcrops. Or if you are feeling more energetic, enjoy one of the nature walks. There is a short 500 metre (20 minute) forest walk or a rather more serious 3.5 kilometre (2 hour) walk to explore.

Eumundi War Memorial

Visitors to the Sunshine Coast's popular Eumundi markets often admire mature figs, camphor laurels, lillypillies, flame trees and a jacaranda along the town's main thoroughfare without knowing their significance.

The Eumundi Women's Patriotic Committee raised ?100 for the planting of 20 trees, representing local lives lost in WWI. Between 1914 and 1918, 87 men from Eumundi and the surrounding district enlisted.

Memorial avenues were an uncommon choice in Queensland although many flourished in southern states. Originally figs were planted to create Eumundi's memorial drive. Only five have survived. Replantings introduced the mixture of trees. Every tree had a unique bronze tablet bearing in brass letters the name, unit, date and place of death of a deceased soldier. Over time some were lost. The 12 remaining plaques now can be found in the Eumundi Historical Museum.

Eumundi is one of the few towns in Queensland without a monumental type WWI memorial.

The trees provide a focal point for remembrance ceremonies, particularly on ANZAC Day when school children place floral tributes at the base of each tree.
