Cooyar War Memorial

In the Darling Downs township of Cooyar, two WWI memorials stand side-by-side ensuring this community's loyalty to the Empire is never forgotten.

State parliamentarian Arthur Edward Moore MLA (who would become premier a few years later) unveiled the Cooyar War Memorial on 14 July, 1923.

A marble soldier statue standing on a pedestal honours the 25 local men who died in WWI. The adjacent stone plinth reminiscent of a gravestone serves as a roll call of all 110 men who enlisted; their names inscribed on a leaded marble plaque. Such displays provide valuable local history, unattainable from military records where names are categorised alphabetically or by military unit.

Public subscription and entertainment fundraising events amassed ?413.10.0 for the memorial, designed and produced by Toowoomba-based RC Ziegler and Son. The soldier statue was crafted and imported from Italy.

The WWI memorial stands in Hack Menkins Park, beside the main highway passing through Cooyar.

Roy Emerson Museum

The Roy Emerson Museum is situated in Blackbutt, high on the Great Divide, approx 180 kilometres North West of Brisbane and adjacent to the very popular Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.
The building was the original Nukku State School where tennis great Roy Emerson completed his primary years.

There are many photos and stories about Roy as well as the "soon-to-be" life size bronze statue situated at the Nukku Nook precinct. The museum houses a collection of photos and memorabilia from the days of local timber getting, early schooling, farming and the building of the railway.

The old Nukku Siding, with refurbishment almost finished, takes pride of place behind the museum. They are presently laying track in the hope they can access a carriage, completing the stage, so to speak.

There are many old videos to sit and watch; the timber industry, rail building, tennis matches from last century and the restoration of the severely, flood damaged Taromeo Cemetery.

Tag-along-tours are another feature conducted by this band of passionate members with visits to Taromeo Station, Jessie's Well, Hill 60 and local Bora and Kippa rings. The museum is open 10am to 2pm daily and all visitors are made most welcome.

Crows Nest Regional Art Gallery

Crows Nest Regional Art Gallery actively nurtures and promotes the local artistic community, with monthly exhibitions featuring the original works of local painters, sculptors, photographers, textile artists, ceramicists, printmakers and wood turners.

The gallery also regularly features exhibitions and artists from outside the region and holds a popular Christmas Festival Exhibition where art works are available for sale.

The gallery's annual Crows Nest Acquisitive Art Prize has gained a steady reputation, offering generous prize money and attracting high quality entries from far and wide.

Established in 1996 in the board room of the original Crows Nest Shire Chambers, the gallery is run by a part-time coordinator and a dedicated team of volunteers.
